Newcastle United enjoyed a 1-0 win over Burnley on Saturday, picking up their first victory in the Premier League this season. Martin Dubravka was praised for picking up a clean sheet and impressing between the sticks, but he had help from the likes of Jamaal Lascelles who was also outstanding at St James’ Park.
The 28-year-old was dominant in the air and the best passer among Newcastle’s defenders, so it wasn’t a surprise to see supporters on social media lauding his efforts. Lascelles has been overdue a good performance and delivered when the pressure was on.
Against Burnley, Lascelles played for 90 minutes, had 51 touches, won 11 aerial duels, completed 71.1% of his 38 passes, had two shots, made one tackle and had six clearances. The club captain has made 11 Premier League appearances this season but hadn’t kept a clean sheet or been on the winning team until Saturday.
Lascelles had his critics following some below-par showings at centre-back too and came close to losing his place, but he’s proven his worth to Eddie Howe and should keep his spot ahead of Sunday’s trip to face Leicester City.
