Newcastle’s Lewis Hall backed by Shearer to secure England spot

Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall can establish himself as England’s first-choice left-back, according to Alan Shearer.

The former England captain believes Hall’s understanding with Anthony Gordon could give him an advantage in Thomas Tuchel’s side ahead of Saturday’s Nations League meeting with Croatia.

Writing in his Betfair column on Friday, Shearer said: “Lewis Hall can make the left-back spot at England his own.”

He praised Hall’s attacking qualities and highlighted the partnership with Gordon as a particularly encouraging feature of Tuesday’s victory over Czechia.

Lewis Hall England partnership catches Shearer’s attention

Hall completed 90 minutes in the 2-0 win in Prague, earning his fifth senior cap as Gordon and Harry Kane scored.

Shearer believes the familiarity between Newcastle’s current left-back and their former winger could help Hall strengthen his international position.

He also recognised Nico O’Reilly’s qualities and versatility, while identifying the Gordon connection as something different Hall offers.

O’Reilly has since withdrawn from the squad. However, Tuchel has not confirmed Hall’s selection for the Croatia match.

The England manager offered an encouraging assessment of his remaining players in Friday’s official press conference, confirming that everyone still in camp completed training.

For Hall, the next opportunity is to turn a positive performance and Shearer’s backing into a sustained run in the team.

Croatia against England kicks off at 5pm BST, with live coverage on ITV1 and ITVX.

England then host Czechia at Wembley on Tuesday, giving Hall another potential opportunity before returning to Newcastle.
