Sean Steur reached another milestone on Friday evening by making his Netherlands Under-21 debut during their 0-0 draw with Norway.
The Newcastle United midfielder started the European Championship qualifier on the bench at De Adelaarshorst before being introduced in the 83rd minute.
It completed a rapid international rise for Steur, who had only received his first Netherlands U21 call-up earlier this month.
Newcastle United confirmed that the 18-year-old had previously represented his country from Under-15 to Under-19 level before stepping up to Michael Reiziger’s squad.
Sean Steur reaches new milestone after Newcastle move
Steur’s debut comes less than three months after he completed his move from Ajax to Newcastle.
The Magpies signed the Dutch midfielder on a five-year deal in July after his breakthrough season in Amsterdam.
He arrived having already made senior appearances for Ajax and featured in the Champions League, while Newcastle handed him the number 14 shirt.
Steur has since started to force his way into Matthias Jaissle’s plans on Tyneside.
His international progress has now continued after he was introduced late against Norway, although the Netherlands were unable to find a winner.
The Dutch dominated much of the contest, recording 18 shots and more than 66 per cent possession, but the qualifier ended goalless.
Steur will now hope for further opportunities when the Netherlands U21s continue their qualifying campaign away to Slovenia on 2 October.
