Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle points to Barcelona to defend tactics

Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has pointed to Barcelona as evidence that his attacking approach can succeed in the Premier League.

Speaking at a media roundtable reported by Hayters, the German explained why he believes players can adapt to demanding methods across different leagues.

“The style will work anywhere,” Jaissle said.

He cited his experience in Saudi Arabia, where he also faced doubts about the physical demands of his football.

Matthias Jaissle explains Barcelona comparison

“Look at Barcelona now and the way they are flying,” he said.

He sees similarities between Hansi Flick’s methods and the Red Bull coaching system, while acknowledging Flick’s different background.

Players adapting to Flick’s demands provided his example of how ideas can transfer between footballing cultures.

That confidence comes alongside his admission that implementing Newcastle’s new principles has proved tougher than expected, with a short pre-season restricting time on the training pitch.

Newcastle have lost once in Jaissle’s opening seven competitive matches. However, the 4-1 defeat at Leeds underlined how much work remains despite that encouraging overall record.

The Magpies’ next competitive test comes away to Coventry City on Monday, 12 October, with kick-off at 8pm BST.

For Jaissle, the task is to translate his confidence in the approach into more consistent performances from his new squad.
