Yoane Wissa delivers goal and assist as DR Congo beat Zimbabwe

Newcastle United striker Yoane Wissa continued his outstanding international form with a goal and an assist as DR Congo beat Zimbabwe 2-1 in Harare.

The 30-year-old opened the scoring after half an hour before creating Samuel Moutoussamy’s second goal in first-half stoppage time.

It means Wissa has now scored eight times in his last 12 appearances for his country, having also found the net against Equatorial Guinea earlier in the international break.

Read Newcastle highlighted before kick-off that Wissa had the opportunity to extend his impressive DR Congo scoring run, and the Newcastle forward duly delivered.

Wissa stars in DR Congo victory

According to AFP’s match report, Wissa reacted quickest after Zimbabwe goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze failed to deal with a cross, poking the loose ball home in the 30th minute.

He then turned provider before the interval, releasing Moutoussamy to double DR Congo’s advantage from inside the penalty area.

Wissa came close to adding further goals, sending one effort narrowly wide before striking the woodwork shortly after the hour mark.

Marshall Munetsi pulled one back for Zimbabwe in stoppage time, but DR Congo held on to secure successive victories in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.

The result leaves them top of Group E with six points from their opening two matches.

Wissa had already scored in the 2-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea and will now return to Newcastle having made a significant contribution in both international fixtures.

His form provides another positive for Matthias Jaissle ahead of Newcastle’s return to Premier League action, while Read Newcastle’s international tracker is following the remaining Magpies still away with their countries.
