Newcastle United striker Yoane Wissa was on target for DR Congo as they opened their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea.
Wissa scored his country’s second goal in Kinshasa, putting the result beyond doubt after Chancel Mbemba had given the hosts an early lead.
The Newcastle forward struck in the 72nd minute, collecting possession inside the penalty area before finding the bottom corner.
CAF confirmed Wissa’s goal as DR Congo made the perfect start to Group E with three points and a clean sheet.
It is another positive moment for Wissa during an encouraging start to the 2026/27 campaign.
Yoane Wissa takes Newcastle form onto international stage
Wissa has already made an impact under Matthias Jaissle at Newcastle this season.
He scored in the 2-0 Premier League victory away at Tottenham in August and was subsequently nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month award after his strong start to the campaign.
Newcastle United confirmed that Wissa’s August performances included both his goal against Spurs and an assist in the 2-2 draw with Liverpool.
His importance at St James’ Park has also grown away from his goals.
Wissa was recently named as part of Newcastle’s new five-man leadership group alongside Dan Burn, Joelinton, Malick Thiaw and Lewis Miley.
Thursday’s goal provides another indication that the 30-year-old remains in good form despite Newcastle’s lengthy break from domestic football.

Wissa’s international break is not finished yet.
Newcastle’s official international schedule confirms that DR Congo travel to face Zimbabwe on Monday 28 September, with kick-off scheduled for 5pm BST.
Another productive performance there would allow Wissa to maintain his momentum before returning to Tyneside ahead of Newcastle’s Premier League restart against Coventry City.
