Sofia Borg has made Newcastle United history after signing her first professional contract with the club.
The 18-year-old goalkeeper becomes the youngest Australian to sign professional terms in England after joining Newcastle United Women earlier this year.
Newcastle United confirmed Borg’s new deal, with the teenager continuing her development between Tanya Oxtoby’s first-team environment and the club’s Under-21 side.
Borg joined Newcastle in March following a trial period after previously developing through the Football West Academy in Australia.
Sofia Borg continues Newcastle development
The Australian has already spent significant time around Oxtoby’s senior squad.
She regularly trains alongside first-team goalkeepers Anna Tamminen and Kayla Rendell and has also been involved on matchdays as Newcastle’s third goalkeeper during warm-ups.
Borg said signing professional terms meant a great deal to both her and her family, while outlining her ambition to keep developing and earn as much competitive football as possible.
Oxtoby praised the goalkeeper’s progress after she returned from an injury setback and confirmed she will continue receiving valuable minutes with Newcastle’s Under-21s.
Her contract follows another significant academy milestone for Newcastle Women.
Earlier this week, Abbie Richardson became the first player to progress through Newcastle’s women’s academy before signing professional terms.
The two deals provide further evidence of Newcastle’s attempt to build a stronger pathway beneath Oxtoby’s senior squad while continuing to compete for promotion.
Borg will now look to keep progressing around a first-team group which returns to WSL2 action against Leicester City on Sunday.
Newcastle’s official fixture list confirms the game takes place at Gateshead International Stadium with kick-off at 1pm BST.
