Matthias Jaissle Allays Anthony Elanga Thigh Injury Fears
Matthias Jaissle says Anthony Elanga’s thigh injury may not be as severe as first feared, after the winger was forced off during Newcastle United’s 2-1 win over victory over Hull City. The head coach played down suggestions of a lengthy spell on the sidelines when he spoke to reporters afterwards.
Sweden have already left Elanga out for matches against Poland, Romania and Bosnia and Herzegovina this autumn, a call explained in our sweden national squad omission update. Some reports suggested the injury could keep him out for up to two months, but Jaissle stopped short of confirming any timescale for his return.

Speaking after the Hull City win, Jaissle addressed Elanga’s fitness directly.
Hopefully it is not too bad but we are taking it step by step. We are counting on the medical department to bring him back as soon as possible. “We are being smart in the process, it is a long season so we don’t want to hurry up too much. But also I want to have him back as soon as possible.”
He struck a similar note on the club’s wider injury situation. “We hope! We pray! And we are optimistic this is the situation, and we call on the medical department to get the players back as soon as possible.”
Two shorter fitness notes emerged from the same match. Sean Steur was withdrawn after an hour and replaced by Fabian Schar, with Jaissle offering a simple explanation: “Hopefully it is only a cramp.”
Tino Livramento withdrew on the morning of the match with a muscle problem. Jaissle described the timing of that decision in the following terms:
It was really late and the final decision was in the morning.
Squad Impact & Tactical Context
Newcastle were missing nine players in total for the Hull City fixture: Dan Burn, Amar Dedic, Elanga, Nico Gonzalez, Ewen Jaouen, Joelinton, Livramento, William Osula and Jacob Ramsey. It is the longest absence list Jaissle has faced all season. A shortage we assessed when weighing up options to replace the winger.
There is better news elsewhere in the treatment room. Jaissle expects five of those nine, Burn, Gonzalez, Jaouen, Joelinton and Dedic, to be available again when Coventry City visit after the international break.
Osula’s problem is specifically an ankle injury rather than anything more serious. He is targeting a return to Premier League action next month, rather than straight after the break.
Jaissle also pointed to the physical toll the Premier League places on his younger players. “That is something in our young squad. We need to adjust to the physicality of the Premier League. It is an area that we can improve.” Squad depth looks set to matter just as much as individual recoveries as fixtures pile up.
What Happens Next / Upcoming Timeline
No firm return date has been placed on Elanga. Newcastle have not confirmed any scan result. Jaissle’s comments pointed towards a gradual, carefully managed recovery rather than a rapid comeback. The medical department will oversee his progress through the international break.
Burn, Gonzalez, Jaouen, Joelinton and Dedic could all return to contention for the Coventry City game. Easing the pressure on a stretched squad. Osula is aiming to be fit again next month. Elanga’s own timeline will depend on how he responds to treatment over the coming days.
Newcastle currently sit ninth in the Premier League with eight points. They have also reached the last 16 of the Carabao Cup. A solid platform heading into the pause. Jaissle was pleased with that return so far this season. “If you seen what happened in the summer, everybody would have signed up to have eight points at this stage. So we are really, really pleased.” Further detail on the club’s injury news can be found in the Chronicle Live post-match report.
