The summer transfer window has closed and the dust has now settled on it. Overall, it was a very difficult one to call. The mood coming out of it is positive for Newcastle United fans.
But how much of that has to do with the recent results and not the club’s overall business this summer? I would say the majority of it. If you ask me, there are still a couple of glaring holes in this squad. If the results go south at any point this season, those will end up becoming a matter of discussion.
For now though, it looks like the fans are quite content with how things played out this summer. Late moves for Nico Gonzalez and Matias Fernandez-Pardo lifted the mood alongside the good results to start the season.
Amid all this, it looks like Newcastle United might not still be done with their transfer business. There is still one player who could be on his way out of St James’ Park.
Newcastle United could still leave despite transfer window closing
The player in question is none other than Nick Pope. The long-time Newcastle United number one now finds himself as a reserve option behind Lukas Hornicek and Ewen Jaouen.
It was widely expected that he would leave in the summer. A move to Ipswich Town or Celtic was even touted for a long time. But ultimately, it did not end up happening.
So, does that mean that Pope will spend, at least until January, sitting in the reserves? Well, not necessarily. It looks like there is still a possibility that he could leave this summer.
According to The NUFC Blog, Matthias Jaissle said about the situation of Pope while talking to the media before the game against Bournemouth:
“Yeah, there are a couple of countries where there are still options that players can move to.
“I had a clear conversation with Nick already a couple of weeks ago about his position here in the club, and to make a move that’s not only a club decision, it’s also a decision of the players, and often also from an agent.
“So there are many, many parts involved usually in deals. So we need to see. But for now, he’s a member of the squad, and I really appreciate him and what he did for the club already, and how he’s dealing with the situation right now.”
Which countries still have an open transfer window?
There are other countries where the transfer window is still open. Clubs from Turkey, Switzerland, Portugal, Mexico, Brazil and several others can still sign players.
So, it is still very possible that Pope could find himself a club where he gets to play regular football. But then again, he might not want to if he wants to continue in English football.
If that is the aim then it would make sense for Pope to sit in the reserves until the winter transfer window and then try to find himself a club.
At that point in time, there might be plenty of teams that are not happy with their first-choice goalkeepers or looking to strengthen due to injury. So, a window of opportunity could open up for Pope.
