Newcastle United have seen their fair share of moves get hijacked in this summer transfer window. It had looked like Victor Munoz was on his way to St James’ Park before he ended up at Liverpool.
That was followed by the Johan Manzambi saga. For weeks, the Swiss World Cup standout was thought to be Newcastle United’s top target in midfield. In fact, they even agreed a fee with SC Freiburg, only for the youngster to choose to join Aston Villa instead.
So, this has not been an easy time for Newcastle United in this summer transfer window. But now, it has been suggested that they could have the chance to swoop in for one of Sunderland’s potential signings.
According to Football Insider, Newcastle United could be set to hijack a deal of their own, and against their bitter rivals, Sunderland. The Magpies are targeting Dayann Methalie.
Why the window is open for Newcastle United to swoop in
According to La Depeche, numerous clubs are vying for Methalie. But the Toulouse management remains firm until suitors make an offer that meets their expectations. Sunderland’s latest bid, estimated at €33 million, has been rejected.
It is believed that Toulouse are looking for €40 million to part ways with the left-back. Will Newcastle United be the ones to make that move?
Methalie is 20 years of age and has only played 31 times for Toulouse so far. He has also represented France at multiple youth international levels.
What does this mean for the future of Lewis Hall?
Of course, one aspect that one cannot ignore in all this is the Lewis Hall factor. The Englishman has been heavily linked with a move away this summer.
Manchester United are rumoured to view Hall as their top target for that number one spot. And the Newcastle youngster is said to be keen on a move to Old Trafford as well.
Newcastle United want to keep him, there is no doubt about that. But in case the player actively pushes for the move, they might have no choice but to consider the idea.
One would hope that their interest in Methalie has nothing to do with the Hall situation. After all, the Magpies do need more options in the full-back position.
Then again, would the Magpies consider the idea of signing someone for a €40 million transfer fee, just to be the back-up option at left-back?
