It is no secret that Newcastle United need a consistent goalscorer. The Magpies never really managed to replace Alexander Isak, as he left for Liverpool last summer.
Nick Woltemade was brought in for that role. And even though he made a bright start, scoring four goals in five games, he would end up losing that early spark quite quickly. By the end of the season, he had only managed 11 goals and was not even playing as the number 9 a lot of the time.
Another forward who was added in the previous summer transfer window was Yoann Wissa. He scored just three times across all competitions, and only once in the Premier League.
So, it is not hard to understand why Newcastle United fans would like to see another quality striker being added to their ranks. And it looks like someone who found the back of the net 38 times last season might be on their radar.
Newcastle United linked with Luis Suarez
According to Ekrem Konur, Luis Suarez’s desire to leave Sporting CP has reached the international market. He has a contract that runs until 2030 with an €80 million release clause.
Not only have Newcastle United been linked with him but there were reports that the Magpies had made an approach for Suarez in May. But they had been pointed towards his release clause back then.
There have been reports in the Portuguese media in recent times though that not all might be fine between the Sporting CP management and Suarez behind the scenes.
Who is Luis Suarez?
If those reports are accurate, then a Suarez exit could become a lot more likely. In that scenario, a door could open up for Newcastle United to finally make their move.
Do not be confused by his name. This is not the Liverpool and FC Barcelona icon. Or the 1960 Ballon d’Or winner. While Suarez has some famous namesakes, he is doing pretty well on his own too.
What is interesting is that he had not looked like an elite goalscorer for most of his career. In fact, he spent a lot of his time playing in the second division of Spanish football.
It was just a couple of years back that something clicked into place for Suarez. He scored 31 goals in a season for Almeria. They were in the second division though.
But it was enough to earn him a move to Sporting CP. His numbers did not drop. On the contrary, he managed 38 goals in his debut campaign for the Portuguese club.
28 years of age, this is a full Colombian international striker at the peak of his powers. Of course, there would be some risk involved. But it might be one worth taking.
