Newcastle United will be looking to bring in reinforcements in several areas across the pitch. One of them is in the middle of the park.
Sandro Tonali has left for Tottenham Hotspur. Bruno Guimaraes could do the same, with personal terms already agreed with Arsenal. That would mean losing the club’s undisputed two best midfielders in the same window.
Sean Steur has been signed so far. And while the 18-year-old, brought in from Ajax, is considered a top talent, it would be unfair to expect him to come straight into the team and perform. He needs to be given time to adjust to the Premier League and develop into a senior-level player.
Lately, there have been some links with Lucas Bergvall as well. Tottenham Hotspur have already spent a lot of money strengthening their own squad and might need to let a few players leave over the coming months. It has been suggested that Newcastle United have already seen a £46 million bid rejected for the Swedish midfielder. But is that the case?

Sky Sports journalist, Keith Downie, has dropped an update on the situation. And it might not be exactly what we had initially thought.
While speaking on his own YouTube channel regarding the situation, Downie said:
So, Spurs have spent a lot of money this transfer window, as we know. They’ve brought in a whole host of players to please manager Roberto De Zerbi, have a real go of it this summer. I mean, they spent £185 million alone on two midfielders, Mateus Fernandes from West Ham and, of course, Sandro Tonali here from Newcastle United.
So, they’ve splashed out. They now need to balance the books. They’re now looking at outgoings. So, the information I have is there’s been a conversation between Tottenham and Newcastle over Lucas Bergvall. And if Newcastle were interested in the player, which I believe they are, what would it take for Newcastle to A put in an offer, and B for that to be accepted?
What I’ve heard is that Tottenham actually came to Newcastle, not so much offered the player up, but had a bit of a conversation about him. Two of the the top brass at the football club have had that conversation. I think it was an exploratory conversation to start with, but it’s since transcended into the fact that Newcastle have now sort of inquired as to themselves what it would take. So look, as I understand it, Newcastle have not had a formal bid turned down.
So, it looks like talks so far between both parties have been exploratory in nature, although there does seem to be some level of interest on the part of Newcastle United. Whether that will lead to a satisfactory bid or not remains to be seen.
Should Newcastle make a move for Bergvall this summer?
It is worth pointing out that Newcastle United did agree a deal with SC Freiburg to sign Johan Manzambi. That was only for the player to opt to move to Aston Villa instead.
So, they still do have a budget left for their midfield reinforcements, which would further increase if Guimaraes did end up leaving as well at some point in this window.
Even though still just 20 years of age, Bergvall does already have a decent level of experience under his belt. If Newcastle United did end up signing him, there is a decent chance that he would be a starter for the Magpies.
Then again, it would all depend on the kind of transfer fee that Tottenham Hotspur are looking for. If it is anything beyond the £50 million mark, a move would not make sense. And even for that figure, there would be a fair bit of risk involved for whoever ends up signing the Swedish midfielder.
