Newcastle United will need to strengthen multiple positions this summer. Of course, the forward areas present a problem. Nick Woltemade never managed to replace Alexander Isak. Now, Anthony Gordon has left as well.
So, unsurprisingly, over the last few days, we have seen Newcastle United being linked with a move for both strikers and wingers. On top of that, midfield could be area of concern as well.
Sandro Tonali already appears to have a foot out the exit door with Tottenham making a failed £80 million bid to sign him. Bruno Guimaraes and Joe Willock are potential candidates to leave the club as well.
At the same time though, it might be time to strengthen the defence as well. Only Tottenham conceded more goals than Newcastle in the Premier League last season, among the teams that were not relegated.
Newcastle United tipped to sign Spanish international
There is a distinct lack of depth in some positions across the pitch. One of them is right-back. A former Barcelona man could be the solution to that issue.
According to the Mirror, Newcastle United could resolve their right-back headache by moving for Celta Vigo’s Oscar Mingueza. The defender is poised to become a free agent.
Of course, it is not a suggestion that has been made out of nowhere. There have been reports in Spain linking Mingueza with a move to Newcastle United.
According to AS, two Premier League teams are leading the pack in the race to sign Mingueza. One of them is Arsenal. The other is Newcastle United.
Would Mingueza be a good signing for Newcastle United?
When it comes to versatility, Newcastle probably won’t be able to find someone with Mingueza’s at this point in time. He mostly plays as a right-back but can feature on the left just as easily. And he has also played as a centre-back, even at the international level for Spain.
Then you take into consideration the fact that he is set to be available as a free agent. That has to be one of the most attractive things about this move as well.
Newcastle United failed to qualify for Europe. That has negatively affected their spending power in this summer transfer window for sure.
So, if they can find someone of Mingueza’s quality and versatility as a free agent, it cannot get better than that. Of course, with Arsenal also in the race, it is not going to be straightforward.
