- Newcastle United edging closer to Munoz deal
- Claims of Real Madrid buy-back clause denied
- Why Newcastle want to get deal done quickly
Newcastle United’s pursuit of top target Victor Munoz is continuing to progress, with a deal reportedly edging closer to completion.
The Magpies are expected to trigger Munoz’s release clause of £34.6m, with the finer details currently being ironed out.
There had been some rather confusing reports over the past week suggesting that a deal would see Real Madrid insert a buy-back clause in his Newcastle United contract due to Los Blancos still owning 50% of the player’s rights.
But those reports have been rubbished by Newcastle journalist Craig Hope in a video on his YouTube channel, with Hope suggesting the Magpies are looking to complete a deal in the coming days.
What did Hope say?
Speaking about Newcastle’s talks to sign Victor Munoz, Hope said, “The player we are expecting to arrive at Newcastle is Victor Munoz; they’re really close to an agreement on that.
“He’s currently out here (in America) with Spain at the World Cup; didn’t get on yesterday during that 0-0 draw with Cape Verde, but I’m told that one is close to an agreement.
“Newcastle are really positive; there are a couple of complicating factors in terms of the logistics of Munoz actually being out here. Crucially on this as well, the suggestion in Spain that Real Madrid would have a buy-back clause in Muñoz’ contract if he did sign for Newcastle – I’m told that is not the case.
“If Munoz comes to Newcastle, at no point would they be vulnerable to Real Madrid coming in at any point down the line and saying ‘He’s our player now; we’ll take him back’.”
The news will be a welcome one for Newcastle United fans, who were rightly worried that the proposed clause in Munoz’s contract would leave them susceptible to losing their player if he had a good first season on Tyneside.
Newcastle United looking to get deal done sooner rather than later
On top of the new reassurances about the Munoz deal, Newcastle are looking to get it done as soon as possible, preferably within the next week or so.
This is mainly because, with Munoz at the World Cup, the club is worried that any good performances may push his price up and see other clubs become interested in his services.
The Magpies’ hierarchy will have breathed a sigh of relief that the Spaniard did not get on the pitch against Cape Verde, especially given how the game was poised for a substitute to make a big difference.
Spain’s next World Cup fixture isn’t until the 21st, when they take on Saudi Arabia, which gives Newcastle approximately four days to get a confirmation before.
