- Ex Newcastle United star dealt blow at new club
- Kieran Trippier confirmed as Wolves player on Monday
- Rob Edwards had heaped praise on Trippier
Ex Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier completed his free transfer to Wolves this week, but the new venture has not got off to a perfect start for the veteran.
The 35-year-old left St James’ Park as a free agent this summer, bringing about an end to a four-year stay on Tyneside.
Trippier, who joined from Atletico Madrid while the Magpies were fighting relegation, made 160 appearances for Newcastle and had been a stalwart under Eddie Howe.
Kieran Trippier dealt unexpected Wolves bombshell
The full-back had only featured in four of the last nine Premier League matches last season and risked becoming a fringe figure next term, if a contract extension had been signed.
Instead, Trippier opted to walk out the door at St James’ Park when his contract expired. It took the player little time to find a new club, as he was unveiled as a Wolves player this week.
Trippier will return to the Championship and look to help get the Midlands outfit promoted back to the Premier League on the first attempt. However, his time at Molineux has got off to of an unexpected start.
On Thursday morning, it was confirmed that Wolves had sacked manager Rob Edwards after just seven months at the helm. The 43-year-old is said to have first found out about the shock decision via social media with Cesar Peixoto set to replace Edwards.
A statement from the club read: “Following a comprehensive review at the conclusion of the season, the club has determined that a change in leadership is necessary as Wolves enters the next stage of its development.”
It’s a potential setback for Trippier, who will have had positive talks with Edwards about the upcoming Championship season before putting pen to paper.
Rob Edwards had been delighted to sign ex Newcastle United star
Celebrating the signing of the Newcastle man, Edwards had said: “I’m so happy to bring him here. When we met, it was evident that he really wants to come to Wolves.
“We know what we’ve lacked this year, and we know what we need next year – experience, leadership, resilient characters and strong characters – that’s what we’re going to need in abundance, and Tripps ticks every box. From quality to experience to leadership to know how, and he also has a real hunger. He wants to help us get promoted again, and this is really something for us to achieve.
“He did have good options elsewhere, so for us to be able to get it over the line and get him in is a real coup. But it shows what a big club we are. We are a big draw and building on the Andre news, I don’t think we could have had a better start to the summer with what we’re trying to do.”
Trippier now faces somewhat of an unknown as he waits to get to know Peixoto. The 46-year-old is set to arrive from Portuguese side Gil Vicente in his first post away from his home country.
The former Newcastle defender will bring bags of Championship experience to the newly relegated side, having played 174 times in the division while at Barnsley and Burnley. He registered six goals and 34 assists in that time.
