Fabrizio Romano confirms massive transfer blow for Newcastle United

Newcastle United are braced for an important summer and have already made their move to sign a couple of players.

Zadok Yohanna and Victor Munoz have been heavily linked with the Magpies in recent days, which is a sign that Eddie Howe is really keen to reinforce his attack.

Newcastle United have also been credited with an interest in Jeremy Monga, who burst onto the scene for Leicester City last season in the Championship.

But now, it appears as if he could be elsewhere, with Fabrizio Romano confirming what could be a bitter blow for the Magpies.

Jeremy Monga headed to Arsenal

Monga made his Premier League debut for the Foxes during the 2024-25 season and featured regularly as they suffered relegation from the Championship.

He was the only bright spark in what was an otherwise dreadful campaign for Leicester City and is set to move on this summer.

Newcastle’s interest is well-documented, but Romano claims Monga has now opened the door to a move to Arsenal.

The Gunners have recruited quite well in terms of young players in recent seasons and seemingly want to continue that with Monga.

The young attacker and his representatives are now in talks with Arsenal, with a deal expected to be finalised in the coming days.

As things stand, Mikel Arteta’s side are at the front of the queue, so Newcastle might have to look elsewhere for attacking reinforcements.

Massive blow for Newcastle United

Considering the prices being quoted for senior attackers, signings like Monga could help the club save millions in the future.

The youngster made his debut aged just 15 years and 271 days, becoming the third youngest player in Premier League history after Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri.

Incidentally, his Premier League bow was against Newcastle United when the two sides locked horns at the King Power Stadium towards the back end of the 2024-25 campaign.

And speaking after the game, then-Leicester City manager Ruud van Nistelrooy lavished praise on Monga’s cameo and his development.

“It’s [Monga’s] development. It’s so quick, the way he’s improving. He’s shown it in training and that’s why we put him on.

“He showed a glimpse of his quality and he will only get better. Well done to him and hopefully there’s more to come.

“He had Ricardo also behind him, to talk to him a lot, to support him, but you can see his capabilities – to dribble with the ball, with the left and right foot, and he’s a really exciting one.”

Newcastle are set to have a busy summer and will look to sign a rough diamond or two. That said, Monga will not be moving to St James’ Park, unless, of course, there is a late twist.

matchday.
