- Newcastle United want to sign Zadok Yohanna
- Young winger wanted by multiple other clubs in Europe
- Yohanna could be Magpies’ Anthony Elanga replacement
Anthony Elanga’s first season at Newcastle United didn’t go as planned as the Swedish international struggled to hit the ground running after his move from Nottingham Forest.
And now, Sky Sports report that the Magpies are interested in signing Zadok Yohanna, who has earned rave reviews for his performances for AIK.
Newcastle United are likely to sign multiple attackers in the upcoming transfer window, especially after Anthony Gordon’s big-money move to Barcelona.
And if Yohanna is signed, he would well be the Magpies’ replacement for Gordon and also effectively end Elanga’s hopes of becoming a key player for the club.
Newcastle United in race for Zadok Yohanna
Earlier today, we wrote on Read Newcastle that Eddie Howe wants to sign both Yohanna and Victor Munoz to bolster his options up front.
And now, Keith Downie claims the Magpies have held talks with the Swedish club to sign the 18-year-old winger, who is wanted by several clubs across the continent.
AIK are incidentally the club where Alexander Isak made a name for himself before finding his way to Newcastle United via Real Sociedad and Borussia Dortmund, so they have produced a key player or two over the years.
No price tag has been mentioned for Yohanna yet and Newcastle United are yet to submit an official offer. However, their interest is well documented and it remains to be seen if they press ahead with a bid in the coming days.
What does this mean for Elanga?
Whether or not Yohanna – or anyone else joins – the writing seems to be on the wall for Elanga.
The £55 million fee Newcastle paid to secure his services from Nottingham Forest last summer looks increasingly like a massive mistake with each passing day.
On his day, Elanga is a good player and his devastating pace could be useful in Howe’s system. However, he simply hasn’t produced the goods regularly and won’t be anywhere close to being a regular starter next season.
Elanga is yet to score in the Premier League for Newcastle, with each of his three goals coming in cup competitions (two in the UEFA Champions League and one in the FA Cup).
Yohanna is just 18 and a move to the Premier League will be a massive step up for a player who hasn’t played in any of Europe’s top five leagues yet.
However, the Magpies are better off backing a youngster who is hungry to succeed rather than Elanga, who hasn’t filled himself in any glory since his headline move to Tyneside last summer.
