- Newcastle transfer updates on Camara and Jaouen
- Why this summer could be different
- Magpies still face competition for signings
Yesterday marked a rather hectic one in the world of Newcastle United transfer news.
French goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen was reported to have agreed to a deal in principle with the Magpies, and a deal for Lamine Camara is thought to be advancing.
This summer is set to be a big one for the club, with some big departures and new blood expected to be brought in. The advancement of these two deals at such an early stage may be a sign of things to come.
Newcastle are well aware of their shortcomings last summer. Waiting too long and not acting fast enough cost the club a lot of its top targets. The Magpies are clearly angling to make sure those mistakes aren’t repeated this summer.

Newcastle look to get business done early
Last summer marked a disaster in many ways for Newcastle.
A plethora of targets went awry. The most prominent of which was James Trafford, whom the club spent what seemed like forever trying to sign before Man City nipped in and activated their first right of refusal.
The club then also lost star man Alexander Isak without so much as a contingency plan in place. Something else that looks to have been guarded against in this summer’s recruitment strategy.
Whilst there is, of course, still a lot of work to do, the news about both Jaouen and Camara does bode well for the Magpies, and it appears a more proactive approach will be taken to getting deals over the line.
Will Newcastle sign Jaouen and Camara?
Of the two players, Jaouen appears the most likely to join the club when the window opens.
The negotiations for the 20-year-old appear to have gone almost entirely under the radar to this point, with the goalkeeper having visited Newcastle’s facilities on Tyneside a couple of weeks ago.
In Camara’s case, Eddie Howe’s side still face a lot of competition to secure the Monaco star’s signature. There is also reported interest from the likes of Liverpool and other clubs.
It is reported that there are other options on the table for Newcastle, with a deal for Camara not expected to be straightforward.
The most prominent of those appear to be French youth international Kevin Danois and Aleksandr Stankovic from Club Brugge, who is appreciated internally.
There is the possibility that the Camara news is more smoke and mirrors than anything concrete, especially given Newcastle’s tendency to get deals done with players not heavily media-linked.
But no matter what the outcome, it is a positive sign to see the Magpies getting business underway nice and early.
