Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has handed Arsenal and Manchester United yet another transfer clue over the future of Anthony Gordon this morning.

The England international has found himself at the centre of a transfer saga weeks before the summer window opens. Last month, reports claimed that Gordon felt he had ‘outgrown’ the project on Tyneside.

The winger bagged 10 Champions League goals this year and is thought to be keen to carry on playing at that level with the Magpies set to miss out on European qualification next season. Since then, Gordon’s representatives have been seen holding talks with FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

It appears as if the Bundesliga giants are frontrunners to sign Gordon and bolster an attack that already boasts former Premier League stars Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Luis Diaz. Sky Sports this week reported that Gordon had already agreed personal terms with Bayern but that the Magpies’ £75 million valuation remained a sticking point.

Gordon hasn’t played for Newcastle since those first claims he had outgrown Howe’s team first emerged. The 25-year-old was absent from the matchday squad against AFC Bournemouth and Arsenal, although that was put down to a hip niggle.

The former Everton man was then an unused sub against Brighton and Nottingham Forest. Howe had hinted that part of his selection decision could be to do with the player’s future.

On Friday, Howe doubled down on that with his most crystal-clear comment to date. Ahead of facing West Ham, he said: “I think when you get to this stage of the season, part of what we will be doing, we’ll be looking to next year, naturally.

“Anthony’s just come back from injury. I think the team has played well in his absence and with a partial view to the future, yes.”

Those words come after Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg claimed that, while the deal with Bayern is progressing, there is still serious interest in a transfer from Premier League rivals.

On Thursday night, he wrote: “Anthony #Gordon has top options in the Premier League. However, his preference is a move abroad – a new challenge. If so, then FC Bayern is his desired destination.

“Bayern are offering a top contract until 2031. The bosses Dreesen/Eberl are talking directly with Newcastle.

“Bayern are currently offering €60m. #NUFC have not yet lowered their demands. No agreement in sight at this stage.”

Liverpool are known to have tried to sign Gordon in the summer of 2024, but that deal did not come to fruition. More recently, Arsenal and Manchester United have been linked.

The Gunners’ wingers, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, have been regularly linked with exits in recent transfer windows and could open up the chance to invest on the flanks.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have been touted as potential suitors since February and Fichajes continues to report on Red Devils interest at the end of April.

Currently, it appears as if Gordon would prefer a move to the continent and a link-up with England teammate Kane. However, the final call could come down to Newcastle United depending on which club is able to offer the lofty £75 million asking price.
