Newcastle United and Premier League rivals, including Manchester United, may be on the verge of a fatal transfer blow to hopes of a summer swoop for Nottingham Forest full-back Neco Williams.

The Magpies could well be in the market for new full-backs come the end of the campaign. Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento have both been linked with moves away and, even if the duo stay at St James’ Park, it’s a position that has been hit hard by injuries.

Lewis Miley has had to fill in over recent weeks but he too is now out for the rest of the season with a broken leg. Meanwhile, veteran Kieran Trippier has already confirmed that he will leave St James’ Park at the end of the season.

The summer rumour mill is just starting to gather pace and Williams is one name who has been tentatively linked with the Magpies. The 25-year-old has been a key figure at the City Ground this term with 51 appearances for the club.

Williams has also taken on captaincy in recent weeks and his progress is thought to have turned the heads of rivals. The defender still has another three years left on his current deal, which was only signed last summer.

However, BBC reporter Sami Mokbel claims that interest from Newcastle United and Manchester United, as well as Aston Villa and Everton, could trigger Forest to open negotiations over a new deal.

Mokbel claims that the Magpies are one of the sides to have made ‘discreet enquiries’ over Williams’ availability but Forest are determined to keep the player, who cost just £12 million to sign from Liverpool in 2022.

A new contract could include a huge transfer clause and ultimately be a fatal blow to any budding hopes of bringing Williams to St James’ Park.

Speaking about his current form in March, the defender said: “I’d say it’s probably been one of my best and consistent seasons I’ve had as a player.

“I think I’ve missed one Premier League game from my own doing when I obviously got sent off.

“I’ve always found it a bit difficult to get that consistency and I think as a professional you need that consistency especially when you’re playing in the Premier League.”
