Newcastle United striker William Osula has taken home the club’s Player of the Month accolade for April in a landslide victory, and debuted a new hairstyle in the process.

April was a dismal month for the Magpies. Eddie Howe had hoped that his side would return from the lengthy international break in style and bounce back from the 2-1 defeat to Sunderland in front of a home crowd at St James’ Park.

However, Newcastle were beaten by Crystal Palace, AFC Bournemouth and Arsenal as the side endured a run of five straight defeats across all competitions. There were few reasons for optimism, but Osula was one of them.

The 22-year-old has been selected to lead the line for the side ahead of Nick Woltemade, Yoane Wissa and Anthony Gordon in every fixture since the international break. It’s the latest controversial decision from Howe when it comes to team selection.

A large portion of fans would rather see their big money signings from last summer in the XI but Osula has answered critics with goals. The striker was on target against both Crystal Palace and Bournemouth in April, as well as netting against Brighton earlier this month.

Admittedly, there was little competition for the Player of the Month award given the team’s form, and Osula won the accolade with 76% of the vote.

Speaking about the ex Sheffield United man at the start of May, Howe said: “He is very hungry, motivated and believes in himself. I think he has a really bright future.

“We signed him with the view of developing him and trying to build him to become a Premier League player, because that certainly wasn’t the player we recruited.

“He has done really well to stay stable, commit to that development and see the longer-term plan. It is great to see that when he comes into the team and gets an opportunity, he grabs it.”

Magpies fans react to new Osula trim

Messages of congratulations for Osula came flooding in online, but there was one aspect of the club’s post which also caught the attention of Magpies fans as Osula debuted a new hairstyle. One bantered that the new trim is that of a ‘player ready to score 25 Premier League goals next season’.

One fan said: “I thought it was some collage image, but nope, it’s official! What an amazing hairstyle.”

Another said: “Swear Osula goes to the GTA barbers, never seen a bloke haircut look so different every month.”

Meanwhile, referencing The United Strand, one fan joked: “Looks like he’s growing his hair until we win five games in a row.”
