  • Bayern Munich in pole position to sign England international
  • Magpies £75m price tag remains sticking point

Newcastle United continue to make progress in negotiating an expected summer transfer exit for winger Anthony Gordon amid interest from Champions League giants.

The England international has been a key member of Eddie Howe’s first team since signing from Everton for £40 million in January 2023.

Gordon has gone on to score 39 goals and provide 28 assists for the Magpies. Last month, reports emerged that the forward felt he had ‘outgrown‘ the project on Tyneside.

The 25-year-old netted 10 Champions League goals this season and is thought to be keen to carry on playing at the top level next season. Newcastle are unlikely to be able to offer European football for the 2026/27 campaign.

Gordon has been an unused substitute in each of the team’s last two Premier League matches, having missed the two prior with a hip injury. The player’s representatives had been spotted holding talks with FC Barcelona and reports of Bayern Munich interest have been widespread.

On Wednesday, Ben Jacobs provided an update on the saga and claimed that Newcastle and Bayern had reached an initial breakthrough in negotiations. However, a transfer fee is yet to be agreed.

Taking to social media platform X, he wrote: “Broad terms now in place between Anthony Gordon and Bayern Munich.

“However, there remains a gulf in valuation between Bayern and Newcastle with club-to-club talks ongoing.

“NUFC seeking £75m+. There is optimism the club’s valuation will be met given the volume of initial interest.”

Ally McCoist questions £75m Gordon valuation

News that the club are confident of receiving the lofty £75 million asking price for Gordon is a huge boost. Not only is that a sizeable profit on the £40 million paid to Everton, but it would be a big step in funding a much-needed summer rebuild on Tyneside.

Scottish football legend Ally McCoist is one pundit who had poured scorn on that price tag. Speaking to talkSPORT last month, when the £75 million tag first emerged, he said: I wouldn’t be paying £75 million for him. No way. Even more so if I was Bayern Munich, because he’s not going to start.

Why are you going to pay £75m for a backup? I mean, where is he going to play?

“He’s not going to get in before Olise, Diaz, [Serge] Gnaby, Harry Kane, Musiala. I’m sorry, and I like him, but he ain’t getting in there.

“So in answer to the question, I think it would be crazy to pay £75m for somebody.”
