- Newcastle United set to sell Anthony Gordon
- Could Burnley star be £30m replacement?
- Jaidon Anthony stunned Aston Villa at weekend
Newcastle United officially confirmed their position in the Premier League next season with a point against Nottingham Forest.
That’s not the position that Eddie Howe will have hoped to have been in at the start of the campaign, with Champions League qualification set as a firm target. However, after a torrid run of form which saw his side lose five matches in a row, there is some relief not to have a stressful final two weeks of the season.
One club whose survival hopes were dashed long ago is Burnley. The Clarets have parted ways with Scott Parker and are preparing to plummet to the Championship once again as they continue to yo-yo between divisions.
Jaidon Anthony stuns Aston Villa
There have been relatively few positives for Burnley this season but one is the talent of Jaidon Anthony. The 26-year-old arrived at Turf Moor from AFC Bournemouth permanently last summer, after a loan spell with the club in the second tier.
Anthony cost the club just £10 million but has proven to be worth much more than that. The winger has managed eight goals and four assists in the Premier League, despite his team’s dismal form.
The former Cherries man stunned Champions League-chasing Aston Villa on Sunday. The Villains travelled to Turf Moor as firm favourites but Anthony netted the opener after just eight minutes in an unexpected turn of events as the underdogs picked up a point in a 2-2 draw.
Now, SportsBoom claim that Newcastle United could offer the player the chance to bounce straight back into the Premier League as a replacement for Anthony Gordon.
Newcastle United join Everton and Leeds United in £30m transfer interest
It’s the type of transfer which screams Howe and not necessarily one that lines up with the new push for young recruitments. Anthony is already 26 years old and expected to cost around £30 million.
Everton, Fulham and Leeds United are also said to have made enquiries for the player but were put off by the Clarets’ valuation. It’s claimed that the Magpies want to move ‘sooner rather than later’ with Burnley aware of the interest from Tyneside.
Gordon’s exit from St James’ Park now seems confirmed and that will be a big hole that needs filling. Speaking after the draw against Nottingham Forest, Howe said: “Obviously, he has returned from an injury. I am looking at the team, and I am pleased with how the team has performed in the last three games. So I didn’t want to make too many changes.”
In a later radio interview, Howe was then asked about not playing Kieran Trippier despite an injury to Lewis Hall. In words that could also speak volumes for Gordon’s benching and future, he said: “And obviously Kieran’s future has been revealed, so I’m focusing on the players that will be here next season.”
