Newcastle United seem to be looking into a never-ending well of regret when it comes to the 2024 sale of Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest.

Already this season, the Magpies have had to watch their academy product become one of the division’s top rated prospect and an almost certain for the England World Cup squad.

On Sunday, Anderson then danced through Eddie Howe’s defence to poke home an equaliser in the dying moments. That goal sent Newcastle home with one point instead of three and effectively ended any last hopes of European football next season.

Elliot Anderson tipped for £100 million transfer

Anderson joined Nottingham Forest for just £35 million in 2024 and, with plenty of transfer rumblings ahead of the summer, is now valued at a lofty £300 million. If the Magpies had held on a little longer, that could have tripled their money.

The club was forced into selling Anderson two years ago to meet financial regulations with Howe outspoken about the fact he did not want the player to leave.

Now, both Manchester United and Manchester City have been linked with the player, who seems destined for Champions League football next season. Speaking after the 1-1 draw at the City Ground, former Premier League man Jamie O’Hara told Sky Sports: “When you look at it you go, could Newcastle have kept hold of him?

“He will go for £100 million. In the summer, there will be a team, Manchester United or Manchester City who will be after him. Can Forest keep hold of him? Maranakis likes to keep hold of his players and will do everything he can.

“He is sensational. He’s been a brilliant player this season for them and Eddie Howe will be gutted he had to let him go.”

Do Newcastle United hold Anderson sell-on clause?

FourFourTwo report that due to the pressurised circumstances of the Anderson sale – being a rush to meet financial regulations – Newcastle United were unable to insert a sell-on clause into the deal.

Newcastle needed to maximise their ‘pure profit gain’ from the academy graduate and therefore all focus was on the up-front fee rather than a potential future boost.

That means that the Magpies will not pocket any of the touted £100 million fee, if coughed up by Manchester United or Manchester City, with all profits going to the City Ground.
