Former Newcastle United and Arsenal star Isaac Hayden has become a free agent following his release from Championship club QPR.
Hayden shared his gratitude to the London club on his social media. The midfielder made 29 appearances this season and endeared himself to the fans as a solid servant.
The Jamaican played his last Newcastle game in 2021/22 and was out on loan until 2025, when he left Newcastle for good.
Isaac Hayden released by QPR
Hayden has gained a reputation for being a top professional throughout his career. He is fondly remembered by most of the fans he has played in front of.
This sentiment was largely corroborated in the replies to his X and Instagram posts, with QPR fans leaving overwhelmingly positive comments about his time at the club.
His departure marks the end of his second stint at the club in three years. He ends his time with 47 appearances for the London club, which is the second most he has made for any club during his career.
Hayden’s time at Newcastle United
The now 31-year-old spent six seasons playing regular football at St James’ Park. He did not officially leave the club until 2025, when a mutual termination of his contract was agreed to allow him to explore other opportunities.
Hayden made 151 appearances for Newcastle, scoring six goals. The highlight of his career in black and white was the Championship season in 2016/17. He was heavily involved as the club won the league on the final day and secured promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt.
The Jamaican continued as a squad player for the next few seasons before the club’s upward trajectory forced him to look elsewhere for first-team football.
This was the midfielder’s first season free from his Newcastle contract, with previous moves to Norwich City, Portsmouth, Standard Liège and QPR all coming in the form of loan deals.
Hayden is a player regarded highly by most Newcastle fans. He endeared himself to the Geordie faithful by being a highly reliable option during his tenure.
Where next for Isaac Hayden?
Hayden’s footballing future is largely uncertain, with the midfielder not yet strongly linked to any clubs.
He will likely continue in England’s lower leagues as he looks to find a club to see out his career.
Hayden still has the ability to be an important player for the right club. His experience would be valuable to a variety of Championship sides. It would not be a surprise to see him end up as a squad player for a team looking to mount a Premier League promotion challenge next season.
Should he want guaranteed starting minutes, a bottom-half Championship side or a top-end League One club could be the most viable option for the midfielder.
