Newcastle United’s Nick Pope dilemma: the good, the bad and the ugly

  • Goalkeeper also nearly cost Newcastle United the match
  • What is his future on Tyneside?

Newcastle United have seen a dramatic shift in areas of their squad during their recent run, though none seem more confusing than their goalkeeper situation.

Eddie Howe opted for Aaron Ramsdale for several Premier League outings in 2026, but in the last two games, he has picked Nick Pope ahead of him.

The Englishman has struggled this season, though he is still capable of producing moments of magic from time to time. The game over the weekend against Brighton captured that perfectly, with some brilliant reaction saves, while also causing a few heart-in-the-mouth moments for the fans at St James’ Park.

Nick Pope – a sure pair of hands?

In the match, there were moments when Pope ensured his side would secure three crucial points, which are hugely important for momentum in the European run-in.

He made an outstanding reflex save from Kaoru Mitoma, before denying an acrobatic effort from Greek forward Charalampos Kostoulas when the Seagulls were piling on the pressure.

The 34-year-old has always been known for making top saves when called upon — the main attribute in his bag of tricks — and he has showcased that on several occasions this season.

However, one of his major weaknesses is his ability on the ball. Many modern-day keepers can influence games with their distribution, whether by calming play down or setting traps for opponents with long balls into space.

Pope cannot do that to the level required, and this was evident against Fabian Hurzeler’s side. His poor distribution led to Jack Hinshelwood firing past him from close range, and, if you wanted to nitpick, he was rooted to his line when the Brighton player was played through on goal.

His worst moment of the game, however, came in the first half, when the Magpies had a firm grip on their opponents and looked set to take full control.

That was until Pope kicked the ball straight to the eventual Seagulls goalscorer, who struck the post and saw the danger cleared. It sparked belief in the away side and gave them confidence that they could threaten.

The question for the Toon Army is whether the English goalkeeper can be trusted as their No. 1 next season. Probably not.

Newcastle United face big Nick Pope decision

He is one of the few remaining goalkeepers of the old guard — excellent with his hands but limited with his feet.

At 34, he is not getting any younger, and he is among the players who have frustrated the Toon Army with his performances this season.

Ramsdale does not appear to be Howe’s long-term choice, but neither can Pope be, and signing a new No. 1 cannot just be a possibility this summer — it has to be the priority, ideally through the door before the World Cup.

He has been a great servant since arriving from Burnley, but his time in black and white could be coming to an end this summer.
