Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali continues to be linked with a move away from the club this summer, and the latest update from transfer guru Fabrizio Romano is said to have put Manchester United and Arsenal on ‘red alert’.

The Magpies paid £55 million to sign Tonali from AC Milan in 2023 and the playmaker has gone on to establish himself as one of the top rated midfielders in the Premier League. Newcastle have stuck by the Italian international through tough times, including a suspension for breaches of FA betting rules.

The behind-the-scenes work of Tonali’s agent to go about brokering an exit from the club has unsurprisingly left a sour taste in the mouths of Magpies fans.

Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali wants to play at ‘high level’

In April, the latest words from agent Pepe Rizzo fuelled the fire of transfer rumours. He told Football Italia: “Tonali is a champion, first and foremost as a person, and consequently on the pitch as well.

“The idea was to take Sandro to a high level, which was an interesting prospect, and it proved to be a successful move even after what happened later [the ten-month suspension for betting].

“Newcastle’s fans and the club have treated Sandro incredibly well and supported him every time.”

Those words came after Arsenal were linked with a sensational Deadline Day swoop for the player in February. That came following an injury picked up by Mikel Merino.

Newcastle will have to sell to buy this summer and the exit of high profile stars feels inevitable. Anthony Gordon, Yoane Wissa and Tino Livramento are also frequently linked with moves away from St James’ Park.

Tonali is another player who Newcastle could cash in on to fund a new recruitment strategy that sees younger acquisitions prioritised. An update from Romano this week has indicated the player’s preference.

Taking to social media platform X, Romano wrote: “Sandro Tonali, not planning to return to Italy this summer despite reports as he’s ready to stay in Premier League.

“Tonali is on top PL clubs shortlist and he’s keen on staying in England at the highest level. Movements soon about his future.”

Manchester United and Arsenal on ‘red alert’

The Sun claims that the latest revelation has put Premier League suitors Manchester United and Arsenal on ‘red alert’. Rizzo had spoken about interest from top flight rivals in April.

When asked whether his player has been courted by Premier League sides, Rizzo replied: “Exactly, that was the aim, and it’s only natural that he’s on their radar; he’s performing extremely well.

“That was the aim and the vision when we made the decision to move to Newcastle, for Sandro to become an exceptional player and the most valuable Italian player.”

In other news, Newcastle United can beat Brighton if Anthony Gordon repeats infamous Everton heroics.
