- Newcastle United transfer XI
- Magpies linked with Nicolas Jackson once again
- £70 million winger also on Magpies radar
Newcastle United are expected to be busy this summer as the club looks to bounce back from a disappointing campaign. Questions remain over several key positions, while speculation surrounding certain players continues to grow.
With Eddie Howe needing fresh energy and quality across the squad, a number of high-profile names have already been linked with a move to St James’ Park. The Magpies could field a completely different side next season if some of these links materialise.
Let’s take a look at how Newcastle United could line up if the current rumours become reality, sticking to Eddie Howe’s preferred 4-3-3 formation.
Newcastle United XI if transfer rumours are true
Goalkeeper: James Trafford
Defenders: Michael Kayode, Malick Thiaw, Ousmane Diomande, Lewis Hall
Newcastle will be actively looking for a goalkeeper this summer. Both Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale have been underwhelming this season. Pope has shown some frailties in his game, while deputy Ramsdale, on loan from Southampton, has also failed to make a strong impression.
Trafford has been on Newcastle’s radar for the past two seasons, and the club are expected to reignite their interest this summer. The England U21 international, who impressed in the Carabao Cup final and FA Cup semi-final, would be an ideal option to take over the No.1 role. Still only 23, he could be a long-term solution in goal on Tyneside.
Tino Livramento is reportedly admired by Manchester City, and if he were to leave this summer, Brentford’s Michael Kayode looks like a strong replacement. He is Premier League-proven, physically strong, and offers more defensive stability.
Malick Thiaw has been solid since his arrival from AC Milan, but the Magpies are still expected to strengthen at centre-back. With Fabian Schär and Dan Burn both ageing, and Sven Botman struggling with injuries and form, Sporting’s Ousmane Diomande has been linked with a move to St James’ Park.
The 22-year-old Ivorian centre-back has been on Newcastle’s radar for some time and would be a strong addition to Eddie Howe’s squad.
Tottenham star to bolster midfield
Midfielders: Bruno Guimarães, Joelinton, Conor Gallagher
There has been plenty of speculation surrounding Bruno Guimarães potentially leaving Tyneside next summer, but he remains hugely loved by the Newcastle faithful. Assuming he stays, he will continue to play a key role in midfield, as he has since arriving from Lyon.
His compatriot Joelinton has also been a rock in midfield, and his presence remains vital to Howe’s system.
With Sandro Tonali’s future uncertain, Newcastle have reportedly turned their attention to Tottenham midfielder Conor Gallagher. After joining Spurs only recently, the 22-year-old could be available if the club were to face relegation. Previously linked with Newcastle, his energy, pace, and relentless work rate would make him a strong addition in the middle of the park.
Could Chelsea star Nicolas Jackson lead the Magpies attack?
Forwards: Anthony Elanga, Nicolas Jackson, William Gomes
Despite inconsistent performances on the right wing this season, Newcastle could still place their faith in Anthony Elanga next year. Eddie Howe has rotated between Elanga, Jacob Murphy and Jacob Ramsey in that role, but end product has often been lacking.
The former Manchester United and Nottingham Forest winger is still only 24, and with his pace and direct running, he could remain a real threat if he improves his output next season.
Nicolas Jackson has been heavily linked with a move away from Chelsea. The Senegalese forward is considered surplus at Stamford Bridge, and with Bayern not extending his loan, he is expected to be available. With a combined goal and assist tally of 42 in 81 appearances for Chelsea, he could represent an upgrade on the misfiring Woltemade, who has recently been used in midfield.
Porto’s William Gomes is another player on Newcastle’s radar this summer. Primarily a right-sided forward, the £70-million valued Brazilian can also operate on the left, which could prove important if Anthony Gordon leaves this summer, potentially opening up a starting role on the left flank.
The 20-year-old is highly rated by Eddie Howe and would fit seamlessly into his system. His pace, skill, and eye for goal could see him emerge as Newcastle’s next attacking star next season.
