Newcastle United CEO David Hopkinson has teased ‘two announcements in the coming days’ with crunch talks among club officials taking place in the North East this weekend.

Yasir Al-Rumayyan will lead a delegation of 25 PIF officials who are in the region to talk about the future of the football club. The conference is a planned, annual event but coincides with a huge drop off in Magpies form under manager Eddie Howe this season.

Newcastle were knocked out of the Champions League in the Round of 16 and are now defeated in their last five matches across all competitions, which included the unforgivable 2-1 defeat to Sunderland at St James’ Park.

The immediate problems and future strategy will be key talking points at Matfen Hall in Northumberland this week. On Wednesday morning, Hopkinson also touched on future plans at the club when speaking at the SportsPro London conference at the KIA Oval on Wednesday morning.

The Athletic carried quotes shared by Hopkinson on a number of topics, including the stadium and transfer strategy. The CEO also confirmed ‘imminent’ new senior management announcements at the club with new faces to play a pivotal part in the next steps.

The outlet claims that Hopkinson teased recruiting a ‘superstar’ for the Chief Marketing Officer role and that Dave O’Connor will start working as the new Chief Revenue Officer in June.

O’Connor is a Geordie who made a name for himself building an agency in Switzerland. It’s added that Newcastle view snapping up the businessman as a ‘coup’.

Hopkinson celebrates ‘superstar’ coup

Hopkinson said: “We’ll be making these two announcements in the coming days. A superstar, an international. He’s going to focus on our digital growth. We cannot achieve all that ambition on Newcastle’s local market opportunity. We’ve got to go global.”

Hopkinson was appointed as CEO in September 2025, taking over from the outgoing Darren Eales. Hopkinson had left his post as President and Chief Operating Officer at Madison Square Garden Sports in the United States, where he led the business operations of the New York Knicks and New York Rangers.

At the time, Newcastle United chairman, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, said: “We are delighted to welcome David to Newcastle United.

“David is an outstanding executive whose track record across global sport and entertainment speaks for itself.

“His experience and strategic capabilities will be invaluable as we continue to build on the club’s presence locally and grow it globally on and off the pitch.

“David’s leadership will be critical as we build upon what we have already achieved since the acquisition towards an exciting future and sustainable success.

“I would like to personally thank Darren Eales for his exceptional work and leadership, as well as his friendship, over the last three years.”
