Newcastle United star Kieran Trippier left a strong first impression on Scottish football legend Ally McCoist when bumping into the commentator over the weekend.
McCoist was out for a drink on Saturday evening and happened to be at the same location where Magpies super fan Sam Fender was celebrating his birthday.
The ‘People Watching’ singer turned 32 years old on Saturday and invited Newcastle defender Trippier along to the celebrations, with the player having been in the capital for the visit to Arsenal. The Magpies man was an unused substitute in that match.

Fender and Trippier are known to be pals, with the defender hot-footing it to Manchester last season after a 0-0 draw with Aston Villa to see the songwriter perform live. An image of the two backstage at the gig was shared online at the time.
The duo reunited over the weekend and Trippier took a moment away from the birthday celebrations to go over and introduce himself to McCoist, as recounted by the pundit on talkSPORT.
McCoist said: “Went out for a couple of pints after the game on Saturday. Believe it or not, the boy Sam Fender was having a party in one of the rooms of the pub. Great lad.
“Wee Kieran Trippier came in. He walks in and comes up to me and says, ‘Ally, how you getting on? We’ve never met but I nearly won your Man of the Match against Manchester United the other day.’

“He should have won it! That was his well-deserved dig at me, I think I actually made a public apology the next morning live on talkSPORT. Brilliant introduction, absolutely tremendous.”
McCoist was referring to the 3-1 win over Manchester United in March. Trippier played 90 minutes in that match and picked up his only Premier League assist so far this season.
NewcastleWorld had hailed a ‘warrior’ performance from Trippier in that match with an 8.5/10 rating. The outlet wrote: “Dealt with Matheus Cunha well despite being done for pace on a couple of occasions. Showed his experience and leadership when NUFC went down to 10 men. Warrior.”
The defender has confirmed his imminent departure from Newcastle United since then and will seek a new challenge at the end of the 2025/26 campaign. Trippier will certainly leave with many fans on Tyneside, seemingly none more so than Fender himself.
