- Yoane Wissa could be heading for Newcastle United transfer exit
- Forward has lost all of Eddie Howe’s trust
- Wissa one of a few sales on the cards
Newcastle United are reportedly ready to cut their losses on Yoane Wissa. The Magpies are set to accept that they will struggle to recoup the £55m sum paid last summer.
Wissa has failed to get going in a black-and-white shirt and appears to be an entirely untrusted figure by Eddie Howe at this stage. The Democratic Congolese player has barely seen any time on the pitch since recovering from his early-season injury.
He has fallen to what many now consider to be the fourth-choice striker behind William Osula, Nick Woltemade and even Anthony Gordon off the left-hand side.
Newcastle United decide Yoane Wissa future
It seems almost a certainty that Newcastle will look to move Wissa on. The 29-year-old has started just four games across the campaign, and every sign from the club suggests Eddie Howe has no confidence in Wissa’s ability to perform for the team.
As a result, the £55m fee that was paid to Brentford isn’t even in the Magpies’ vision when it comes to offloading Wissa. The striker could be sold for a fraction of that fee to make room for a summer signing to bolster attacking options.
Wissa has cut a dejected figure on the bench for Newcastle, seemingly accepting of his role at this stage.
Given the struggles Eddie Howe’s men have had in front of goal, it says a lot that Wissa isn’t even being told to warm up when looking for options.
Wissa’s Newcastle move falls flat
That of Yoane Wissa is a curious case, mainly due to the effort it took to get him to the club in the first place.
Newcastle were adamant about securing the former Brentford man’s services, as was the player in moving to Tyneside.
It was a saga that lasted for the majority of the summer, but Newcastle eventually got their man for a rather hefty sum of £55m.
It was a move questioned last summer, especially given that Wissa only had one year left on his Brentford contract and was 28 at the time of the transfer.
Clearly, that questioning was for good reason, with Wissa immediately suffering a big knee injury and never really recovering to any sort of starting role.
Where the striker may end up is still uncertain, but it feels as if Saudi Arabia could be the destination for the bagsman.
This may benefit Newcastle, especially if he moves to Al-Hilal, a club in which PIF have just sold their majority stake in. This would mean that Newcastle could profit entirely from any sale, as has not been the case previously.
Big transfer window ahead on Tyneside
Wissa’s exit likely won’t impact the departure of other stars, especially given the lower fee he will likely bank.
There are expected to be some big sales this summer alongside the deadwood, with the Magpies understanding they may need to lose at least two big stars to fund the mini rebuild that is needed.
Tino Livramento and Anthony Gordon appear the most likely to depart at this stage. Both are linked with moves away this summer, and, at least in Anthony Gordon’s case, a move is looking increasingly likely amid the Bayern Munich interest.
