- Eddie Howe future at Newcastle United in jeopardy
- Jose Mourinho and Oliver Glasner linked with St James’ Park job
- Howe aware ‘no guarantee’ he stays
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has admitted that there is ‘no guarantee’ over his future at St James’ Park as odds shorten for Jose Mourinho and Oliver Glasner to take over.
The Magpies have slipped to 14th in the table and European qualification is now a tall ask for Howe. Newcastle have lost their last four matches across all competitions and pressure is on the manager.
Speaking after the latest 2-1 defeat last weekend, this time to AFC Bournemouth in front of the home faithful, Howe said: “My fire is burning very, very strongly. That’s no guarantee from my side what’s going to happen in the future because as I’ve said, the forces that move in football clubs move quickly. But my fire is there. There’s loads of wood stacked up and I’m ready to put it on it (the fire)!”
Several prominent names have been linked with the Newcastle United job in recent weeks and ReadNewcastle looks at how the odds are shifting this week.
Marco Silva – 16/1
Fulham manager Marco Silva is out of contract at the end of the season. The Portuguese manager has done a sterling job in getting the Cottagers from the Championship and solidifying them in the top flight on a meagre budget.
That could bode well for Newcastle, who could have spending restricted by a lack of European football. Silva was offered an extension by Fulham late last year but has not put pen to paper.
Roberto Mancini – 16/1
Roberto Mancini is currently working at Qatar Stars League club Al-Sadd. The 61-year-old has a proven track record with four league titles to his name – one Premier League and three Serie A titles.
The Italian hasn’t worked in the Premier League since leaving Manchester City in 2013. When asked about a potential return to the division, he has previously said: “Anytime. Every league is special. I really enjoyed the Premier League and the years I spent in the UK. Every coach dreams of coaching in the Premier League.”
Oliver Glasner – 12/1
According to OddsChecker, the odds of Oliver Glasner becoming the next Newcastle United manager are shortening. However, the Crystal Palace boss is still an outsider at 12/1.
The Austrian has confirmed that he will leave Selhurst Park at the end of the season and is still fighting for a potential Europa Conference League title. Glasner has had his frustrations with a lack of spending in South London, which may not bode well for this summer on Tyneside.
Jose Mourinho – 9/2
Another manager whose odds are shortening, Jose Mourinho is almost on a level with the frontrunner. The former Chelsea and Manchester United manager’s previous quotes could suggest the project on Tyneside would be perfect for him.
He said: “If any club in England from the bottom of the table needs a coach in two years, I am ready to go.
“I had three clubs in England, Chelsea twice, so in four different periods I’ve coached in England and I loved it. I’ve been so, so lucky to live in beautiful countries and beautiful cities like Istanbul, Rome, Madrid, Milan but my family lives in London. London is home so one day I want to be back, unless nobody wants me.”
Andoni Iraola – 4/1
AFC Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola remains the frontrunner to replace Eddie Howe, should Newcastle United part ways with their manager.
The 43-year-old confirmed that he would leave the Cherries at the end of the campaign in a statement last week. The Spaniard oversaw the 2-1 Bournemouth victory on Saturday, having also taken the Magpies to penalties at St James’ Park in a January FA Cup meeting.
