Lewis Miley to PSG? Why Newcastle United will never sanction ‘ludicrous’ transfer

  • Newcastle United transfer rumour is ‘ludicrous’
  • Paris Saint-Germain said to be monitoring Lewis Miley
  • Why Magpies would never sanction sale

As has become the way over the past couple of seasons, the transfer rumour mill is once again swirling around Newcastle United. But this time, it appears even more intense and often farcical than in previous years.

Unlike that fateful year in 2021, which saw the Magpies linked with every name under the sun, it is now the looming threat of departures that plagues social media timelines.

Some of which, granted, are entirely believable. Take the Sandro Tonali to Manchester United or the Anthony Gordon to Bayern Munich speculation; those are at least stomachable.

However, Monday harboured what appears to be one of the most farcical rumours we are likely to see for a plethora of reasons. Lewis Miley to PSG – make that one make sense.

PSG perspective

Given, what seems to me, an almost incomprehensible rumour, it is rather difficult to remain rooted in reason when discussing it, but we’ll try our best.

From a football, business or, quite frankly, any other perspective, Miley to PSG doesn’t exactly scream ‘plausible’.

Granted, Miley has been exceptional this season, relative to the performances of the rest of those involved, of course. But PSG have arguably the most complete midfield in world football right now, backed up by a stack of rotation players and their own academy products they are looking to develop.

So, from PSG’s perspective, in what universe would attempting to pry 19-year-old Lewis Miley, for whom Newcastle will demand an incredible sum, make any logical sense?

Now that isn’t to suggest Miley doesn’t have the potential to go on to play for a European giant such as the Parisians. But at this very moment, signing him would be either a waste of money, as he would struggle to get minutes, or a nightmare for the development of the backups they already have.

Lewis Miley perspective

For a moment, let’s just entertain the idea that PSG are genuinely vying for Miley’s signature this summer.

Why would Miley go there? He is a 19-year-old with a clear first-team pathway at a club looking to step into the elite bracket within the next decade or so. Why would he move to one of the biggest clubs in the world, with arguably the best midfielder in the world in Vitinha?

If he did so, it would be purely from a financial perspective rather than anything rooted in sporting opportunity at this stage.

There is every chance that Miley steps into a starting role next season, especially given the interest in the likes of Sandro Tonali. If that isn’t the case, he will definitely see a massive hike in minutes should he stay fit all season.

Giving that up to never get a sniff at the European champions would be ludicrous. Maybe in a few years’ time, if the development continues in the manner it has thus far, but not in the current climate – no chance.

Newcastle United perspective

Now we get to perhaps the most important of all the viewpoints in this transfer.

Firstly, Newcastle have already seen the consequences of letting a potential world-beater of an academy prospect leave the club – that being Elliot Anderson, of course.

Secondly, unless under pressure from PSR, which doesn’t appear to be the case (at least domestically) in line with the Alexander Isak sale last summer, what on earth would the incentive be?

Newcastle are already seemingly preparing for losing some big players this summer, including in the midfield area. So getting rid of a young, talented prospect who is growing enormously in both maturity and ability each year would be a ridiculous decision.

We ought not to lose our rag yet. There are months of transfer talk ahead. Buckle up, ladies and gents; it’s going to be another long summer on Tyneside.
