- Bayern Munich ‘concrete’ interest in Anthony Gordon
- Newcastle United winger rated harshly by Alan Shearer on the weekend
- England international has endured tough season on Tyneside
Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon is receiving plenty of interest from some of the biggest clubs in Europe, and Bayern Munich are the latest to show their desire to have him in Bavaria next season.
Florian Plettenberg reports that Bayern are looking to add quality and depth alongside last summer’s signing, Luis Diaz, who has been on fire since arriving in Germany with 29 goal contributions in 27 Bundesliga appearances.
The English winger was part of the Magpies squad that fell apart at Selhurst Park as they went on to lose 2-1 thanks to a brace from Jean-Philippe Mateta, with the Toon Army furious with everyone in Black and White and Newcastle legend Alan Shearer gave him a 5/10 rating.
Gordon move away possible
Liverpool and Arsenal have already been keeping a keen eye on the 25-year-old, with the Anfield outfit coming close to moving there in the 2024 summer window.
While Eddie Howe’s side have remained an attacking side, Gordon has found it tough in the last two seasons.
He scored an important goal in the 2024/25 Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal as they went on their way to lift the trophy at Wembley, but his highest goal tally in the Premier League is six in each of the last two campaigns.
The Magpies’ attack has been blunt this season, and many supporters believe he should be doing more to help new faces like Nick Woltemade and Anthony Elanga.
Gordon has recently scored key goals in wins over Manchester United and Chelsea, as well as 10 strikes in the Champions League, but fans aren’t happy with his lack of creativity and drive.
A change may be required to get him back on his feet, and selling him to the current Bundesliga champions, and not a direct league rival could present a perfect opportunity to cash in.
Fan view: Sale could make sense for Newcastle
Without any European football for next season, it’s clear that the Tyneside outfit will have to make key decisions on which players are sold to help progress the club and make sure they don’t face Profit and Sustainability troubles.
It’s believed that he will be available in the summer for around the £60 million mark, with Tino Livramento and Sandro Tonali also potentially on the way out.
The reason a sale might make sense is that Newcastle are still trying to adapt to the Alexander Isak transfer, and Gordon hasn’t really settled in a position since.
Out on the left, he has made little impact this season, and although he’s scored big goals recently as the striker, many want to see Woltemade return to his natural position.
The 25-year-old has helped the club reach new levels, but in order for them to take the next step – similar to Howe – Newcastle may need to move past him and opt for someone who fits coach’s style of play, as well as working extremely hard for the team.
