- Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe under pressure
- Ex Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho linked with job
- ‘Special One’ stance on Premier League return
Newcastle United have once again been linked with a move for Jose Mourinho, and the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss has made his stance clear on a Premier League return.
Speculation over the future of Eddie Howe has intensified following a difficult season. Now sitting 14th in the table after a late defeat at Selhurst Park, Jose’s name has surfaced as one potential option if the club should choose to make a change.
Jose Mourinho on Premier League return
Mourinho has never hidden his affection for English football. Speaking in an interview about a return to management in the Premier League, he had teased that “one day I want to be back”.
The current Benfica boss, whose side is unbeaten in the domestic league during his second season, is open to offers from not just top teams but lower in the table as well.
When at Fenerbahce previously, the manager said: “I think the best thing I have to do is, when I leave Fenerbahce, I go to a club that does not play UEFA competitions.
“If any club in England from the bottom of the table needs a coach in two years, I am ready to go.
“I had three clubs in England, Chelsea twice, so in four different periods I’ve coached in England and I loved it. I’ve been so, so lucky to live in beautiful countries and beautiful cities like Istanbul, Rome, Madrid, Milan but my family lives in London. London is home so one day I want to be back, unless nobody wants me.”
Mourinho has a brilliant track record in England, following successful stints at Chelsea and Manchester United. The Portuguese is also considered a serial winner, with multiple European trophies and league titles to his name. For a club seeking a proven winner, very few carry the same pedigree.
A Future on Tyneside?
Jose’s statements are likely to catch attention at St. James’ Park. It would be one of the most attractive jobs in English football should it ever become available. Newcastle United boast elite support, financial backing and a squad packed with quality despite recent setbacks.
For now, Eddie Howe remains firmly in control and retains significant credit for transforming Newcastle since his arrival. He guided the club back into Europe and ended their 70-year trophy drought.
However, currently sitting 14th in the table and especially after that suckerpunch in South London, the Magpie faithful seem to be growing impatient and would welcome a serial winner like the treble-winning Portuguese.
Fan Voice
There is no doubt Newcastle United have been on the up since Howe came into the fray. From fighting relegation battles to multiple Champions League qualifications and domestic silverware, Howe has completely transformed the Magpies, bringing the club into conversations with the top teams in the league.
Recent form, including disappointing results in the Tyne and Wear derby and the 7-2 drubbing at the Nou Camp, have left fans frustrated. Some believe the former Bournemouth manager has now reached his limit and needs to be replaced.
If the Englishman does need to be replaced, having a manager such as Mourinho is what the club might need to take it to the next level.
The ex Chelsea man is someone who has proven himself in the Premier League on multiple occasions and continues to show he still has what it takes. This would be a good appointment for the Magpies. Jose brings in everything an ambitious club needs – experience, strong mentality and most importantly, trophies.
