Newcastle United and Real Madrid swap deal that would anger Premier League rivals

  • Sandro Tonali still attracting heavy interest
  • Swap deal with La Liga could frustrate Italian’s Premier League suitors

Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali has been subject to interest from fellow Premier League clubs already this season. The Magpies are understandably reluctant to sell the Italian, but Real Madrid’s stance on Eduardo Camavinga could open an interesting door for the club to exploit.

Tonali has been heavily linked with both Manchester clubs as the summer transfer window approaches. Spanish giants Barcelona, and previously Real Madrid, have also been sniffing around the midfielder.

Eduardo Camavinga’s future at Los Blancos is currently uncertain, with the midfielder possibly on the chopping block if the right offers arise.

Tonali & Camavinga swap deal?

With both players looking increasingly likely to see the exit door, the proposition of a swap deal could be one perfect for the needs of both clubs.

Of course, Sandro Tonali would cost more than his French counterpart, with Madrid reportedly looking at taking around £50 million from any sale.

Newcastle are looking to get around the £100 million mark for Tonali, meaning there is a rather prominent discrepancy in the two valuations.

But the Magpies’ stance could well soften on that fee should it be Real Madrid, rather than a Premier League club. That may further be the case if Madrid come with the offer of Camavinga in return with a bit of cash on top.

Newcastle United and Real Madrid swap deal could make sense

Now, of course, a deal would largely depend on Camavinga’s willingness to move to a club not considered in the top echelon of Europe’s elite. But given he has struggled this season and his development has stunted, a club like Newcastle could make a lot of sense for the Frenchman.

For Newcastle, a swap would see the need to scramble for a Tonali replacement eradicated. Something which has been a problem when filling holes left by big losses before, namely Alexander Isak.

Camavinga has a lot of qualities that correlate to what Howe’s men would lose in Tonali’s absence, namely his athleticism and comfort level on the ball.

It would also mean the Magpies don’t lose a top player to a club they are looking to compete with. That is something which could be crucial ahead of a year where they must secure European football.

For Real Madrid, they get a ready-made star in Tonali, who they wouldn’t have to wait for to progress, as was the case with Camavinga.

Tonali would be an excellent fit for La Liga too. His work rate and defensive abilities would provide a balance to the Madrid midfield that has been lacking this season.

The Spanish style of play would also allow Tonali’s technical abilities, which have largely been stifled by the physical nature of the Premier League, to shine through.

Is it plausible?

Newcastle reportedly have an interest in Camavinga; Real Madrid have been linked with Tonali in the past couple of seasons – what’s not to love here?

There would be some logistics to iron out, and given Tonali’s preference could be to stay in the Premier League at this stage, some persuasion may be needed, but it is Real Madrid, after all.

Camavinga is quite keen on a Premier League move, and he would likely have some of the top clubs sniffing around. Newcastle may not offer European football next season, so the project would likely take some selling.

Given all of that, the intricacies may make the deal less than straightforward, but it’s certainly one that makes perfect sense on paper.
