- Newcastle United linked with Liverpool free transfer
- Andy Robertson to leave Anfield
- Premier League rival secure agreement with player
Newcastle United appear to have dealt a fatal transfer blow to any Newcastle United hopes of making Andy Robertson a Magpies player this summer.
The Scotland international has confirmed that he will leave Anfield at the end of the campaign after nine years on Merseyside. Robertson, who is now 32 years old, has fallen out of favour this season.
The full-back has won two Premier League titles with Liverpool and is widely regarded to be one of the division’s best ever players in his position. There was set to be plenty of interest in the player’s services with Robertson to be available on a free transfer.
Newcastle United ‘show interest’ in Andy Robertson
Former club Celtic have been regularly linked and CaughtOffside claimed that Newcastle United were ‘among the clubs showing interest’. Aston Villa were also mentioned.
Eddie Howe knows that Kieran Trippier will quit St James’ Park come the end of the campaign, leaving a gap to fill at full-back. Should Lewis Miley and Tino Livramento stay on Tyneside, which is not guaranteed, the Liverpool man would once again struggle for minutes.
However, it appears as if that is nothing to begin thinking about for the Magpies with talkSPORT claiming that the player has already made a ‘verbal agreement’ with Tottenham Hotspur.
Robertson appeared to be on the verge of moving to Spurs at the end of the January window but that deal collapsed at the last moment. It’s claimed that Roberto De Zerbi has arrived in North London and approved of the club’s longstanding interest.
It’s added that the agreement with Spurs will depend on the club maintaining their place in the Premier League. De Zerbi’s side currently sit in the relegation zone.
Robertson confirms previous Tottenham interest
Speaking about the previous Tottenham links in March, Robertson had said: “There was obviously interest there – there were discussions had with both sets of clubs. But the decision was that I wanted to stay. We stayed at Liverpool and that was the decision made.”
In a press conference on Friday, Liverpool manager Arne Slot said: “He had many great seasons over here as a player but I think people got to know him as a great person as well, I got to know him, every team-mate will tell you how funny he is and how great a person he is and that has been shown a lot on social media as well.
“What I remember most about him is the intensity he is always playing with. We have learned something about intensity two days ago, but I can [remember] Robbo making a press from left full-back to right-back a few years ago and I showed that to the players I was working with then. “He has won everything here, really loves this club, it has been a great nine years at the club. But we saw this season he didn’t play as much as he used to and as a result of that he is leaving.
“It is difficult to be in that position longer than a season. Every player wants as much regular first-team football as possible.”
