- Eddie Howe has ‘clear vision’ for future of Kieran Trippier
- Newcastle United defender to leave St James’ Park
- Labelled ‘one of the best’ by Howe ahead of Crystal Palace
Newcastle United return to Premier League action against Crystal Palace this weekend, the first game since Kieran Trippier announced he would be leaving the Magpies at the end of the season once his contract has expired.
Trippier took to social media last week to make the announcement, receiving plenty of love from fans and teammates.
In his press conference, reported by the Newcastle Chronicle, Eddie Howe claimed he had talks with the former captain about what lies ahead.
He said: “He came to see me, we had a discussion, and he had a clear vision of what his future looked like. We respected that, and we wanted him to get the best reception he deserves for his time here.”
Kieran Trippier to leave Newcastle United after four years
The 35-year-old moved to Tyneside in 2022 from Atletico Madrid as part of the first set of players to make a big impact under the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund ownership.
He has made 157 appearances for the club so far under Howe, and will be hoping to continue his solid displays with his side trying to force their way into a European battle.
Trippier will play his final few games in Black and White, starting with the match at Selhurst Park, and his manager had high praise for him and what he’s achieved at St James’ Park.
Howe said: “He is one of the best players I have ever worked with; he is a real leader, and he deserves all the plaudits.”
Alongside Brazilian teammate Bruno Guimaraes, Trippier helped set up a new leadership group under the manager, which was essential to the club qualifying for the Champions League twice and winning the Carabao Cup.
Replacements are already being rumoured in the media, with Atalanta’s Marco Palestra being named in reports. The manager maintained the idea that it is too early for transfer talk quite yet.
He said: “It is difficult to predict, but I am right across everything for the summer and next season with Ross (Wilson) and David (Hopkinson), whether that is potentials during the transfer window … there are a lot of unknowns with Europe, etc.”
Newcastle United need exceptional replacement
Howe’s words about the full back highlighted the presence he has in the squad as a player and a leader, something which will be tough to replace.
A way to make this easier would be for the club to qualify for Europe, even if that’s the Conference League.
The 48-year-old spoke about his aspirations to make sure they can at least do that this season.
Howe said: “Pride is at stake, and we want to do our supporters proud. If there is a carrot for us, it is the European places, and the gap is small between us and the teams ahead of us.”
Trippier has been one of the main players during his four and a half years on Tyneside, but for Newcastle United to replace him effectively, they may need the defender’s help in qualifying for Europe.
