Newcastle United scout high-flying Coventry City duo amid summer restructure

Newcastle United are preparing for what is expected to be a busy summer transfer window as they look to add much-needed quality to Eddie Howe’s squad. GIVEMESPORT reports that Coventry’s Carl Rushworth and Jack Rudoni are high on their shortlist.

Both of the players have been crucial in Frank Lampard’s squad this season, as the club looks to make their long-awaited return to the Premier League.

Rushworth is currently on loan from Premier League side Brighton. With them having Bart Verbruggen, chances may be limited at the Seagulls, and the Magpies could give him the chance to be a starter in the top flight.

Rudoni moved from Huddersfield to the Sky Blues in 2024 and has since become a key player in the squad.

Newcastle’s interest in the Coventry pair

Significant changes are expected at Tyneside this summer, across multiple positions in their squad.

Aaron Ramsdale’s time at St James’ Park is set to come to an end once his loan expires this summer, while Nick Pope’s poor form has seen him drop to the bench.

Elsewhere in the squad, Sandro Tonali has been linked away with a move to several different Premier League sides, while injuries in that area have seen Nick Woltemade drop deeper. Additions in the middle of the park and between the sticks are understood to be important.

Lampard’s side have two possible additions in the two 24-year-olds who could add depth, and even possibly start in Black and White.

Injuries have meant Rudoni hasn’t played as much as he would like, but he’s still made an impact with 13 goal contributions in 27 Championship appearances.

Rushworth has been ever-present this season, having conceded 42 goals in 41 games, while keeping 15 clean sheets, being part of the third-best defence in the league.

A deal could be complicated if Coventry’s promotion push goes to plan, but Howe’s desire may lead to them making the move to Tyneside.

Championship to Premier League signings

Over the past decade, the Championship has become a great place to find some of the best young talents for top division teams.

In recent years, Crystal Palace have signed Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze and Adam Wharton from the second tier, and they have all gone on to have important moments in the red and blue shirts.

In 2018, Norwich player James Maddison moved to Leicester City. He has gone on to have a great career at the Foxes and Spurs, while also earning England caps.

Even last summer, Millwall’s Zian Fleming joined Burnley, and he’s had a solid start to life in the Prem, even though he’ll likely return to the second tier this summer.

Howe’s side wants to get the next best Championship players, and there isn’t anywhere better to look than the top of the league, as they look to strengthen a squad aiming for a much-improved season.
