Newcastle United could target Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, with Football Insider reporting the Dutch international could be on the market for £50 million.
The Dutch goalkeeper has claimed the number one position under Fabian Hurzeler throughout his reign. But the Seagulls may look to cash in on the 23-year-old. He will have two years left on his contract this summer.
Former Everton and Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness believes the Magpies may need to cough up a lot of money to reach a deal. He told the aforementioned outlet:
“If they’re building for the future, it may be a deal to be done if Brighton will accept payments. But I still think that’s an awful lot of money for a goalkeeper.”
Newcastle Goalkeeper Dilemma
Aaron Ramsdale has emerged as Newcastle’s starting goalkeeper in recent weeks, but he hasn’t always been Howe’s first-choice option.
While he featured in the Premier League around Christmas due to Nick Pope’s injury, the Magpies’ clash against Manchester United at the start of March was the first time Ramsdale had been selected ahead of Pope.
Pope has faced his most difficult season yet, with several mistakes costing his side valuable points throughout the campaign. The veteran English shot-stopper has a year left on his contract at St James’ Park.
| Nick Pope (2025/26 Premier League) | Stats |
|---|---|
| Appearances | 22 |
| Clean Sheets | 7 |
| Goals conceded | 32 |
| Goals conceded per game | 1.5 |
| Saves per game | 3.0 |
| Goals prevented | -2.82 |
| Errors leading to goals | 3 |
| Saves made | 67 |
| Saves caught | 0 |
Pope’s error against Everton led to Howe turning to Ramsdale ahead of him, yet Ramsdale only signed on a loan deal from Southampton in the summer, and it remains to be seen whether a buy option will be exercised.
Prior to the 27-year-old joining on loan, Newcastle were heavily linked with a move for James Trafford, who had a significant part to play in Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League.
However, Trafford returned to Manchester City under Pep Guardiola, yet that may have been the wrong decision. The Cityzens later signed Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain in the window, which has limited Trafford’s playing time.
There have been several links to keepers in recent months for Newcastle, but with his Premier League experience as a young keeper, Verbruggen will be near the top of it. He has been with Brighton since July 2023 and has grown into one of the most reliable shot-stoppers in the top-flight.
Verbruggen the answer?
While Verbruggen has developed well over the last two seasons, he hasn’t been at a world-class level, which Newcastle could be evaluating as they seek to reach the next phase.
This season, Verbruggen has kept seven clean sheets in 30 league appearances, the same as Pope, who has played eight fewer matches. Last season, he ranked 14th in the Premier League with seven clean sheets, while Brighton conceded 59 goals, the seventh-worst total.
While you can argue the team from the south coast plays an attacking brand of football under their German manager, Howe also likes to have an attacking edge to his team.
While Brighton’s defensive sufferings can’t be solely blamed on the Dutch international, he may shoulder some of the responsibility. The £50 million fee may also be a striking blow for Newcastle’s summer resources if they fail to qualify for any European competition, which seems to be the case now.
Trafford has once again been linked with a move to St James’ Park in the summer, and Ramsdale could always be a possibility for a lower fee.
There is no doubt that Newcastle will look to add quality in between the sticks this summer, but the question remains. Who is the right choice for Newcastle to become a European regular rather than an outsider?
