Elliot Anderson could find himself homeward bound as Newcastle United are reportedly considering the possibility of bringing their former academy graduate back to St James’ Park in the summer.
The highly rated 23-year-old midfielder originally came through Newcastle’s youth system and was regarded as one of the club’s most promising homegrown talents before he was sold to Nottingham Forest in 2024.
However, the Magpies’ decision to sell the midfielder was not entirely football-related. At the time, the club needed to comply with the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), forcing them to cash in on an academy product.
Anderson subsequently completed a move to Nottingham Forest in a deal reportedly worth around £35 million. Dubbed the ‘Geordie Maradona’ by Bristol Rovers fans following an incredible loan spell with The Gas in 2022, he has developed significantly and established himself as a first-team regular since joining Forest.
Newcastle eye Anderson reunion
Anderson was instrumental in Forest’s push for European football last year, with the City Ground side missing out on Champions League qualification by just one point.
The midfielder has been praised for his technical ability, energy, and versatility, allowing him to operate as both a central midfielder and a winger.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is believed to remain a big admirer of the player, per TEAMtalk. Howe previously expressed regret about losing Anderson, admitting he would “love” to bring the academy graduate back to St James’ Park if circumstances allowed.
Despite the admiration from his former club, a reunion may yet prove difficult. Anderson’s form at Forest has attracted interest from elsewhere. Reports suggest that both Manchester City and Manchester United are monitoring his progress closely ahead of the summer.
“It was very sad, you never know you’re going to join a club and play. In my head at the time, I never knew it was going to go the way it has so it was obviously a really tough one to take” – Anderson told BBC Sport
While Newcastle would be the obvious sentimental option, if a bidding war were to develop, they could find themselves in the frustrating position of struggling to compete financially for a player they sold only a short time ago – whose sale was financially motivated in the first place.
A dream for the Toon

For most Geordies, the idea of Anderson returning to the club remains an appealing prospect. As a local talent who came through the academy, he still holds strong ties to the club and its fanbase – and even attended last year’s Carabao Cup final victory as a fan.
For now, Anderson continues to focus on his progress at Nottingham Forest, where he continues to establish himself as one of the club’s standout performers, despite a difficult season that currently sees them in the relegation zone.
Whether Newcastle will eventually manage to bring their former prospect back to Tyneside remains uncertain, but the situation is expected to develop over the summer, especially if Forest are relegated.
