Newcastle: Osula Picks Up Award For Stunning Winner vs Manchester United

  • Osula wins goal of the month award
  • Stunning solo goal against Man Utd recognised
  • Newcastle forward’s future uncertain

Newcastle United striker William Osula has today been announced as the Premier League goal of the month winner for March.

The goal came back on March 4th in a brilliant solo effort that sealed a stunning late 2-1 victory over Michael Carrick’s side at St James’ Park.

Osula has struggled for consistent minutes again this season. But the Denmark international’s goal marked a representation of exactly what he can do when given an opportunity.

Osula Magic against Man Utd

The goal was scored in the dying embers of Newcastle’s home game against Manchester United last month. Osula worked exceptionally hard and won the ball back inside the defensive half before laying off to Trippier. He then began a lung-bursting sprint down the right flank.

Trippier stroked a ball down the line, which Osula just about managed to keep in play. The Dane stumbled but managed to keep his feet before driving toward Malacia, who backed off into the Man United box.

A lightning stepover left the fullback stranded before Osula bent a delicious effort around Harry Maguire. The ball evaded the outstretched hand of Senne Lammens in the Man United goal and nestled into the bottom corner.

St James’ Park erupted, and Osula wheeled away in jubilant celebration. Newcastle had only had 10 men since just before half-time, and the goal sealed a massive result for the Magpies.

Osula Sends a Message

Osula barely had 10 minutes on the pitch that day but made his presence known as if he’d played a full 90.

Eddie Howe trusted him over both Newcastle’s summer signings, Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade. It was a massive vote of confidence and one which Osula repaid in perhaps the biggest way he could have.

The forward cost Newcastle £15m from Sheffield United in 2024 and has found it difficult to worm his way into regular first-team plans.

During his tenure he has become largely a frustrating figure for fans. He clearly has bags of talent and can cause absolute chaos for defences but has struggled to really turn that into consistent impact.

Whilst there have been moments of brilliance, such as the mentioned goal and a stunning strike against Bromley in the FA Cup last year. Osula is seen by many as either not good enough or another case of wasted potential.

It does feel as, if he can be moulded and coached correctly, with that chaotic nature kept alive but harnessed, the striker could become a really exciting player in years to come.

Osula’s Newcastle future uncertain

The Magpies almost moved Osula on in the January transfer window. He was all but confirmed as a Frankfurt player before a deal fell through due to him still having a role to play in the Newcastle squad.

There is no doubt that, despite his lack of minutes, goals like the one he scored against Man Utd will have seen his stock rise. The fee in January was set to be £30m but could be more than that should the club look to sell in the summer.

There is, of course, the possibility that Newcastle look to hold on to Osula and continue his development in the hopes he will become a starter. Especially considering he is one of the highest-quality third-choice strikers you will see anywhere in the world.

But the most likely outcome is the Magpies looking to cash in on Osula in a summer where they are looking to transform the squad.
