Kieran Trippier has spoken about his future at Newcastle United as he approaches the final months of his contract, insisting he still has plenty left to contribute. With his current deal set to expire in the summer, uncertainty remains over whether the experienced full-back will stay on Tyneside.
However, Trippier made it clear he is not thinking about winding down just yet and still believes he can perform at a high level.
Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Barcelona, the former Newcastle captain said:
“The reality is my contract is up at the end of the season, but I’m not thinking about that. I’m just thinking about tomorrow & helping the club get to where they want to be. If I do that, I’ve done my job. I’m not looking beyond that.”
“When I leave, I’ll know I’ve helped the club. There’s loads of possibilities (what could happen). Football is a strange game. The manager will have a talk in the next couple of weeks”
Speculation has grown over Trippier’s future at St James’ Park. Tino Livramento has been linked with a big-money exit in the summer, and as such, reports suggest that might lead to a renewal for the Magpies’ veteran right-back.
Trailblazer Trips
Trippier is widely regarded as one of Newcastle’s most important signings in their history. Swapping La Liga champions Atletico Madrid for St James’ Park in January 2022, the Bury-born defender was the first major name to join the club following their PIF takeover.
The 35-year-old’s arrival at Gallowgate ushered in a new era of stars. The likes of Bruno Guimereas, Alexander Isak, and Sandro Tonali joined the Magpies in the years that followed.
Despite speculation about a possible departure, he remains focused on helping Newcastle succeed, starting with tomorrow’s huge clash against Barcelona. Victory would see his side through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in their history.
Should the Magpies progress, their reward for reaching the quarter-finals would be a tie against one of Trippier’s two former clubs, Atletico Madrid or Tottenham Hotspur.
Speculation over his future at Newcastle was heightened over the weekend when it emerged that Tino Livramento is a transfer target for Arsenal and Manchester City.
If Livramento were to swap Newcastle for London or Manchester, it would surely mean that Trippier extends his stay on Tyneside. The club already has limited options at right-back.
While no final decision has been made about Trippier’s future, his comments underline a clear message: he still feels capable of competing at the top level and remains committed to giving everything for Newcastle for as long as he is at the club.
