Newcastle might have found an ‘outstanding’ Livramento replacement

Newcastle United have a decision to make over Tino Livramento’s future this summer amid recent links to Arsenal and Manchester City. Should the English right-back depart, the Magpies might be looking at signing Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Ryerson as his replacement.

According to Football Insider, Newcastle and Manchester United are keen on signing the Norwegian full-back this summer. This comes with talk of a Livramento sale, with Arsenal and City both showing interest.

Kieran Trippier may also be on his way out, as his deal at the club is set to expire this summer. There is a chance that he will extend his stay at St James’ Park if Livramento departs.

Norwegian at Newcastle

Ryerson has operated on the left and the right since he joined Borussia Dortmund in January 2023. The 28-year-old has been a regular for the German club, including a 2-0 Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in 224.

This season, Niko Kovac has opted for a three-at-the-back formation, with Ryerson utilised as a right wing-back. With 14 assists in 33 appearances this season, including a match against Mainz, where the fullback came away with four assists, this has evidently suited him.

Ryerson has also been reliable since his arrival in Dortmund, with only one major injury, which saw him miss eight games. Livramento has struggled with injuries this season, missing several weeks due to hamstring and knee issues.

With injury issues affecting the 23-year-old’s game time, Howe may look to acquire the services of Ryerson. His former manager Edin Terzic is certainly a fan, once dubbing him ‘outstanding.’

Manchester United interest

Newcastle beat Manchester United 2-1 a week ago, and the Reds suffered an injury setback. Noussair Mazraoui sustained a foot injury, and it’s unknown when he will return.

Diogo Dalot’s performances came under criticism throughout Ruben Amorim’s reign, and they might be prioritising a new right back this summer. The managerial position remains in doubt, with Michael Carrick unsure whether he will be given the reins next season after a great start at Old Trafford.

Managers like Julian Nagelsmann and Thomas Tuchel have been linked to the role, but it’s unclear whether they would want an attacking wingback like Ryerson.

However, it is likely that Manchester United will enter the market for a right-back this summer, given the limited defensive options as they look set to return to European football.

European Effect

With Newcastle sitting in mid-table, it seems their best chance of competing in Europe next season is to win the Champions League. They face a tough test at the Camp Nou next Wednesday to advance to the quarter-finals, with the tie level at 1-1.

Missing out on Europe could be catastrophic for the club’s summer plans and the effects on their finances, so players may have to move to give Newcastle money to spend.

However, Dortmund are also facing financial difficulties. Bild claims that the Bundesliga club may be under pressure to sell players this summer after failing to reach the Champions League knockout round.

The Magpies are looking to extend Lewis Hall’s deal on Tyneside, and want to maintain the services of Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali, who have been linked with moves away.

Livramento might be on the move given the two Premier League title rivals are interested. If he does depart, Ryerson’s attacking output and experience at the top level make him a solid replacement in Howe’s squad.
