Newcastle United are reportedly considering a new contract for Lewis Hall following his dominant display against Barcelona in the Champions League.
Hall delivered an outstanding performance against Barca, with the teams drawing 1-1 at St James’ Park on Tuesday night. It was the first time in Lamine Yamal’s senior career that he failed to register a single dribble.
With yet another impressive game from Hall, The iPaper believes a new deal is “understood to be in the club’s thoughts.” The 21-year-old’s current deal is set to expire in 2029, after moving to Tyneside on a permanent deal in 2024, following a season-long loan.
Locked In
Following the Alexander Isak fiasco last summer, Newcastle will be keen to keep players on longer contracts. This summer, Kieran Trippier’s deal with the club is set to expire, meaning the club will have to move in the market to fill the void.
Key players like Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento’s contracts are all set to expire in 2028. While this gives the club time to sort out those players’ futures, there have already been rumours about them ahead of the summer transfer window.
With Hall’s performances this season, which have helped establish him as a key part of Eddie Howe’s squad, a new deal will be crucial for the club to sort out.
Barcelona Fallout
In the game against Barcelona, Hall created more chances than anyone else on the pitch. With his attacking energy and his defensive capabilities, he offers the perfect mix to be truly effective for the Magpies.
Following the game, Hall said (via Amazon Prime Sports): “I felt like our energy levels and fitness levels carried on through the whole 90 minutes, and I think we deserved more really.”
Newcastle gave Barcelona a tough test throughout the game, as they had seven more shots than the Spanish side, yet a late penalty from Yamal gave them an important goal away from home.
Hall looked ahead to next week’s clash with the Catalans and said he’s “really looking forward” to taking on their Spanish attacker again at Camp Nou next Wednesday.
Newcastle manager Howe would also go on to applaud the English fullback’s performance, stating it was ‘Outstanding’. He also came in for huge praise from Wayne Rooney for his display.
World Cup Dreams
Hall has only made two senior caps for the English national team, with the most recent coming in November 2024 against Ireland.
However, with the spectacular performances that he’s producing this season, Thomas Tuchel may turn to Hall to start in this summer’s World Cup.
While Hall is emerging as a top contender for Tuchel’s side, he will be facing competition from Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly, who has enjoyed a breakout season under Pep Guardiola.
With the world’s eyes on Hall and teams already showing keen interest in Livramento, securing Hall’s long-term future has become one of the club’s top priorities.
