Bruno Guimaraes is a fan favourite at St James’ Park. He certainly is someone who lives and breathes Newcastle. But does he fit into the club’s all-time greatest XI?
Guimaraes arrived at Newcastle from Lyon in 2022 and hasn’t looked back since. In fact, the 28-year-old has steadily improved his game and is now among the top players in the world in his position.
The Brazilian’s love and passion for the Magpies is unmatched. More importantly, he has delivered for the club when it mattered the most. Whether it’s guiding his team when they are behind or staying calm against the biggest opponents, Guimaraes is always there to step up.
It is worth mentioning that Guimaraes also recently captained the Toons to their first major trophy in 70 years, after a 2–1 win against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.
Guimaraes’ Newcastle Speak Volumes
Since joining Newcastle, Guimaraes has made as many as 189 appearances so far, while also registering 31 goals and as many assists. With him being 28 years old, these numbers are only set to grow.
Few would argue that Guimaraes’ impact on Newcastle’s journey over the last five years has been immense. In his debut season itself, the Brazilian featured in 40 matches across all competitions and helped the club finish fourth in the league. In the last campaign as well, the Tyneside outfit fought hard and finished fifth, securing a Champions League spot, with the 28-year-old midfielder playing a key role in that achievement.
Additionally, Guimaraes is one of the rare examples of players of his generation who have consistently put his club first. Despite offers from various top European teams, the Brazilian has made his desire to continue at Newcastle clear. And he has been rightfully rewarded for it with the captain’s armband by the Toons.
Guimaraes on Verge of Legendary Status
Whenever one talks about legendary midfielders of Newcastle, the names of players like Rob Lee and Gary Speed come to mind. Both of these legends were teammates at Newcastle for several years.
Lee and Speed made 381 appearances (56 goals, 51 assists) and 285 appearances (39 goals, 21 assists), respectively. While Guimaraes is yet to reach those numbers, he is certainly on the right path to get there.
The Brazilian has a contract with Newcastle until 2028. While various reports about a possible departure have emerged, Guimaraes himself hasn’t given any indication that he wants to leave.
Fans surely expect the player to extend his stay at Newcastle and continue giving his best to the club. After all, the Brazilian is considered a part of the Newcastle family.
