Trippier should face Liverpool, but is it worth the risk?

Kieran Trippier was an injury doubt ahead of Newcastle United’s meeting with Liverpool on Wednesday, but Chris Waugh of The Athletic said earlier on Tuesday that the right-back should be fit to face the Reds.

Eddie Howe didn’t say Trippier would miss the game in his pre-match press conference either, though he didn’t mention his name at all, but should Newcastle risk it?

Trippier has made five appearances in all competitions this season, scoring one goal with one assist. He’s played every minute of every Premier League game, but it might be wise to rest him against Liverpool if he isn’t 100%.

Newcastle are without Emil Krafth for the long-term after he picked up an anterior cruciate ligament injury, so Trippier and Javier Manquillo are the only natural right-backs left.

Trippier is prone to picking up knocks, having missed two months of last season due to a metatarsal fracture, so his selection may not affect the result against Liverpool.

Howe could be without Krafth, Bruno Guimaraes, Jonjo Shelvey, Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson, so it’s hard to see them picking up points away to Liverpool with such a depleted squad.

Newcastle lock horns with Crystal Palace on Saturday, so that would be a game you want Trippier back for.

In other news, Eddie Howe could start Chris Wood v Liverpool as Callum Wilson remains out

matchday.
