Harry Winks isn’t worth replacing Jonjo Shelvey for

Newcastle United are expected to sign a midfielder this summer, potentially in the place of Jonjo Shelvey, and one player they’ve been linked with is Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Winks.

The London Evening Standard says Winks could be sold by Antonio Conte after struggling for playing time and has interest from the Magpies among other clubs.

The 26-year-old made 30 appearances in all competitions this season but amassed only 905 minutes of Premier League football. Winks found himself behind Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur and Oliver Skipp in the pecking order, so he might need to leave for more playing time.

Eddie Howe has Sean Longstaff and Isaac Hayden to start in defensive-midfield next season, Shelvey’s position alongside Bruno Guimaraes is the one that needs looking at. But Winks isn’t that much of an improvement on the 30-year-old.

Shelvey contributed more goals (3) than the Spurs midfielder (1) this season, makes a similar number of tackles (one every 66 minutes) to Winks (one every 60 minutes) and averages 37.5 passes per game to his 34.4, so is it really worth Newcastle paying £20m?

In other news, Newcastle unlikely to sign Gabriel Jesus despite reports

matchday.
