Newcastle United would like to strengthen their attack ahead of next season and Gabriel Jesus has an uncertain future at Manchester City this summer, but Chris Waugh of The Athletic poured cold water on the rumours days ago. In fact, it’s been two weeks since the media suggested Newcastle were going to challenge Arsenal and Juventus for Jesus’ signature, ignorant of the player’s ambition and financial demands.
Jesus scored 13 goals with 12 assists in 41 games this season, so it’s easy to see why Newcastle would want a player of his ability. The 25-year-old only ticks one box of the Magpies’ transfer policy, however. Jesus is young enough but would cost too much money with a £45m market value and could break the wage structure if he wanted significantly more than the £90k-per-week he earns now.
Eddie Howe has around £80m to £100m that needs to go on signing a left-back, centre-back, midfielder and wide-forward/striker, so Jesus would eat up too much of their transfer kitty. And convincing him to leave the Premier League champions for a side that finished 11th might be tricky.
