Journalists say Sean Longstaff was ‘excellent’ v Burnley

Newcastle United signed off the season with a 2-1 win over Burnley on Sunday afternoon and Sean Longstaff delivered one of his best performances at Turf Moor. The 24-year-old started alongside Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes in midfield and was defensively resolute over 90 minutes.

Dominic Scurr of the Shields Gazette gave Longstaff a player rating of 8/10 and said he put in a ‘very good’ performance in midfield. Scurr added that the 24-year-old was ‘tidy’ on the ball and ‘tackled’ well. Max Parsons of 90min gave the Englishman a player rating of 7/10, saying he put in an ‘excellent’ defensive shift.

Lee Ryder of Chronicle Live gave Longstaff a player rating of 8/10 and claimed he put in ‘one of his best displays’ of the season. The 24-year-old is in talks with Newcastle over a new deal and looks to have a bright future at St James’ Park if he can replicate such performances.

Against Burnley, Longstaff had 48 touches, won one aerial duel, completed 78.1% of his 32 passes, found a teammate with 40% of his long-range balls, made five tackles and had three clearances. The 24-year-old has made 24 Premier League appearances this season and could have an important role under Eddie Howe next season even if a defensive-midfielder is signed.

In other news, journalists say Bruno Guimaraes was ‘rarely troubled’ v Burnley

matchday.
